PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, guns are the leading cause of deaths among youth and young adults in
King County; and
WHEREAS, nearly 40,000 children in King County are living in homes with unlocked
firearms; and
WHEREAS, a public health approach to gun violence prevention is crucial to reducing
injuries and deaths resulting from gun violence; and
WHEREAS safe firearm storage is proven to prevent unintentional shootings and
injury, and firearms from being misused; and
WHEREAS, on July 21, Public Health - Seattle & King County's Regional Gun Violence
Program and the Tukwila Police Department are partnering to distribute gun safety
equipment to raise awareness of harm reduction strategies; and
WHEREAS, effective gun violence reduction requires community leaders, law
enforcement and government entities working together
WHEREAS, we renew our commitment to promote safety by increasing safe firearm
storage and pledge to do all we can to encourage responsible gun ownership to keep
our children and communities safe; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Councilmember Kate Kruller, on behalf of the Mayor of the City
of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim that:
Together, We End Gun Violence
in the City of Tukwila and encourage all community residents to support local efforts
to prevent the tragic outcomes of gun violence and to honor and value human lives.
