PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, each year February is designated Black History Month, a time for honoring and
celebrating the culture and history of African Americans and recognizing that our society's
rich diversity is one of our greatest strengths; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month is founded on work that began in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson
to bring attention to the need for acknowledging and accurately representing Black and
African American history. Black students and educators at Kent State University used the
foundation laid by Woodson to found Black History Month in 1970; and beginning in 1976,
every president has declared the month of February as "Black History Month;" and
WHEREAS, this history of some of us is the history of all of us and our history is what shapes
us as a community; and
WHEREAS, observing Black History Month provides opportunities to gain a deeper
understanding of African American history and acknowledge the centuries of struggles for
equality and freedom; and
WHEREAS, Black and African Americans have made innumerable contributions that have
enriched America, and every American should acknowledge and express thankfulness for
these contributions; and Black and African Americans have made and continue to make
America a better place; and
WHEREAS, we must not forget the men and women who worked tirelessly for freedom, civil
rights and equality for all people and whose deeds helped to broaden and enrich America
culture;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Thomas McLeod, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim
February, 2025 as:
Black History Month
in the City of Tukwila and encourage all community residents to learn about the experiences
of Black and African Americans through history; recognize and condemn the injustices and
inequities that Black and African Americans experience; regret the role of systemic racism in
perpetuating these injustices and to resolve to take action to realize true reforms in our
community.
