VOTERS TURN DOWN CHANGING THE FORMAT OF CITY GOVERNMENT The voters of Tukwila apparently want City Hall left just the way it is — with a mayor overseeing the daily operation of the city. On Tuesday, they voted down a change that would have a full-time manager to handle the administrative duties. The results at the polls were 279 for keeping the current mayor -council system and 89 for switching to a manager -council government. The Tukwila City Council had been deadlocked on the issue, with Mayor Gary Van Dusen finally casting a tie -breaking vote on whether the issue should be put before the voters in a special election. Van Dusen, agreeing with former mayors, has stated in the past that the position is too much to be just a part time job. He advocated the position be upgraded to full time status. Even though the concept of hiring a full time mana- ger has been turned down, the council still has the option of changing the role of mayor from part to full time, however, Frank Todd resigned last summer as mayor when the council declined to change the position to full time status. Renton has a system similar tc Tukwila, with a part time mayor working with a full time administrative assistant, while Kent has a full time city administator and a part time mayor and Auburn has a full time mayor. PLANNING DEPARTMENT REPORTS AVAILABLE The 1982 Land Use Survey and 1982 Employment Survey are now available in the Tukwila Planning De- partment. The Land Use Survey report documents land use patterns and trends in Tukwila. For example, since 1980, a large portion of building development has been in commercial services. Office floor space has increased significantly; 284,945 square feet — or 38.93 percent of the total new building floor area was devoted to office use. The Employment Survey indicates that employment in Tukwila has been stable since 1980. Dropping slightly below the 19,000 employee level recorded in 1980, the 1982 figures show increases only in the commercial ser- vices and communications /utilities sectors. Inventoring the land base and employment popula- tion provides a sound foundation for City leaders to base decisions regarding future directions for the com- munity. The surveys establish where the City has been, is at, and offers insight to the future. Should you have any questions or comments on the 1982 Land Use and Employment Surveys, please contact the Tukwila Planning Department at 433-1849. They will be glad to assist you. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE . . . It is now the beginning of the warm weather, and with the warmer weather we tend to leave things open, and laying about. During the day hours, windows left open for ventilation should be secured in a fashion so no one can crawl through them. Repair or replace locks on screen doors. In placing screens on windows, make it so the window cannot be opened farther than you want it to be. The warmer weather brings about addi- tional problems with ventilation. But with proper thought these problems can be overcome and solved with personal safety in mind. Also, with this time of the year the lawn grows and the equipment needed to clean the yard is often left out- side in an unsecure area. Lock up your lawn equipment, lawn mower, shovel, clippers, and wheelbarrow. These items, if lost by theft, are expensive to replace. Mark your property with your Washington State operator's license number so if your property is recovered it can be returned to you. Another problem is solicitors this time of the r. If someone comes to your door and wants you to ouy anything, ask for his business license. If he does not have a City of Tukwila business license, he has no right to be there selling in your City. Call the Police at 852- 2121 immediately, and we will check them out. If they are legitimate, they will then be allowed to continue. When your vacation time comes around, let your neighbors or a friend know so they can keep an eye on your home and property. Also, let the Tukwila Police Department know so your residence can be placed on a vacation check list. If you have any questions about security, and want to become more involved with your City and Crime Prevention Program, please call Officer Bob Conner at 433-1822. * * * * DIAMOND JUBILEE PARADE The Diamond Jubilee celebration on Saturday, June 4, was enjoyed by all who participated. 10:00 am - The Kid's Parade was fun. Children dressed in fancy clothes, some leading their animals, others on bicycles and tricycles and one young g her horse marched down the street.
