Icetinc adjourne. (ouncil-eont -001.2 p,.2) ATE 23 By Mayor Charles 0. B-.ker The Legislature has adjourned. Many people throughout the State must have given a sigh.of relief at midnight, April 1st. Here in Tukwila it was a time to cele- brate. The Session was over and S.S.-2Z4 had been defeated. Teeieeht 1 have reviewed many j. tars and articles -that were for and against this proposed meesure that would have permitted a Port District to condemn and acquire more than two thirds of cur town. It is interesting:to note ttat the Seattle Area Indus- trieICouncil and some of the Port Districts were apparently tha mein supporters of this bill. PeveSwing the o'eposition we find many from private enterprise, both large and small, who are violently opposed to public or- ganizations, such as Port Dist- ricts, competing with private in- dastry. Our support also came from many individuals. Their opinions can be summarized in the statement of one man who comment- ed Th pert " the conflict is be- tween traditional concepts of private property and the newer sociLl planning concepts in which it is assumed that the Government can more intelligently manage property than can private•owners.f, Many factors contributed to our saccess in defeating this bill. some of these should be enumer- ated. First, we found in our district Legislator, kovery Garret a man sympathetic to our cause and willing to fight for us. After our hearing on March 3rd a constant barrage of pressure was exerted on Avery in an effort to release the bill. Throughout the remainder of the Session he re- fused to yield or have the bill amended. His Leadership and etaunch support was invaluable to our town and our cause. second, the vast majority of our citizens still believe in private enterprise and oppose the ever increasing trend of govern- ment ownership. They believe in the right and freedom of an indi- vieual or Company to either de- veloe or sell the land held in ( Cont. to Coln 2, Pg- 3 ) Tukwila is YOUR TOWN Are you informed on Town affairs? ,.:,,uestion. These people come to assist us in our efforts tote allowed, to develop our land in an orderly and American way. Last, but not least, in our effort to defeat this bill, it became necessary for all who help- ed to work night and day. Their efforts were effective. The victory won is but tempor- ary. We have been successful twice but the shadow of the Port still lingers on. Every owner of Valley land finds this to be true when an opportunity comes to sell his land. Prospective buyers are told that the Port has not aban- doned their plans. They will be back with other bills at the next session of the Legislature. Any group or o,ganization that takes away our freedom and privileges as Americans is cer- tain in the long run to destroy us. The larger Government owner- ship becomes, the smaller we, the private owners, become. Our heritage is government by the people, not government ownership for the people. Remember our reasons for oppos- ing this bill were basically be- aause it deprived us of home rule, it deprived property owners of their land and the ability to develop it, it removed this land from the tax roll, thus creating a greater burden on the remaining property owners, it would take away two thirds of our town. If this can happen to one town, is it not just as possible to happen to another town, county, state or to our Nation? Remember we can go on winning battles but without a lot of support we may eventually lose the war', 1061 U apri. ,:os civ -,1 __ e d 0.7,e, 8:00 1-,L. 11 Coll u t 0lui5 Co y 1....2.11 8:00 .. . 1:-: :'ire :,c )t. i c t" , ^, ire ;' ,11, 8:00 1 ,Ii.6 13 .ssOCiatF d I .C_ io -Cf "J211 800 1' «a , '! 9 Fire Jeot . max; dice :'ire _::1? 7:00 . ,:. « '40-,,,,1 :.,chool 1.'12y looter _:i:;'_,1 achool 8:00 r.z Citi74 .i([vii`1'3 eurtcl1 L0%! _.':11 8:00 .
