VAL LEY IN
C M IVB
By Mayor Charles 0. Baker
The first fall meeting of the Valley
Industrial Commission was held at the
Kent City Hall on the evening of Sept-
ember 26, 1960.
This ves the finish of our first
year as an active group from the four
Valley Cities, working to solve our
common problems and speed the indust-
rialization of the Valley.
Election of officers was the first
order of business. Our new officers
are John Strander, from Tukwila, Chair-
_ man; Jack Thompson, Auburn, Vice Chair-
man and Noel Bicknell of Kant as Sec-
retary.
Several reports were covered during
the evening but perhaps one of most
interest at this time wes the Green-
Duwamish Valley drainage problem.
Throughout the past fifty years
there has been an effort by many
groups and individuals to bring about
the building of a dam at Eagle Gorge,
so that the Valley would be forever
free from floods that have ravished
our Valley lands., from the beginning
of time. Some two or three years ago,
when work on the Howard A. Hansen Dam
was begun, many people believed that
this, at la•t, would assure us ,of a
Valley that could be used. by agricul-
-cure and industry without fear of
floods.
It is true that, with the completion
of the Dam, vie will have solved our
flood problem, but there still remains
the drainage that will become more a-
cute with the completion of the Dam.
At this time we normally have one or
two floods each year. 'when they come
the river overflows, dikes break and
the Valley is often completely under
,:rater. After the flood is over the
river falls to a low level again and
the Va3ley, with few exceptions
drains, as the water finds its way
back to the channel.
When the Dam is completed the river
will no longer reach these extreme
peaks and then recede. Heavy runoff
water, in the rainy season wil be
i imounded in the vast vrr: tershed at the
