City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98188 To: Lodging Tax Advisory Committee FROM: Brandon Miles, LTAC Staff DATE: June 10, 2025 RE: World Cup Preparations and Brainstorming Public Safety Discussion World Cup Preparations and Brainstorming With the World Cup set to come to the United States and Seattle next June, many cities, including Tukwila, are starting to prepare for the influx of visitors to the region. With a large number of hotel rooms, central access, and availability of transit, the City is posed to see a large number off visitors during the matches. City staff have begun initial efforts to prepare for the World Cup. Our efforts have initially focused on: 1. Creating a safe and welcoming environment. 2. Creating opportunities to bring people to the City so they can experience the exactment of the event, even if they do not have tickets. This would include large and small watch parties, with a signature event at Westfield Southcenter (tentatively). 3. Help small businesses take advantage of the opportunity presented by the large number of visitors to the region. 4. Help all business understand the potential impacts so they can prepare. 5. Identify lasting investments that we can make that will extend past the World Cup. For our meeting on Friday we want to share some of our initial ideas and thoughts and get feedback from the LTAC about the preparations. Some questions we would like input from the LTAC on are: 1. How is your business preparing for the World Cup? 2. What opportunities do you see for the City and your business leading up, through, and after the World Cup? 3. What are you concerns? 4. How can the City help with the preparations? 5. What are some ideas for lasting investments that extend after the World Cup? We would like LTAC input on the City’s tentative plans: City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98188 A signature event (hopefully held at Westfield Southcenter) that would include outdoor watch parties, beer garden, stage with music performances, food trucks, activities like small soccer pitches, pickleball courts, playground areas, games, etc. Continuous viewing parties at the Sullivan Center at Tukwila Village. The parties would be marketed with the small food businesses in the neighborhood. The program would help the small businesses get FIFA ready with better visitor experiences and better online marketing. Public Safety Questions We would like to have a discussion on public safety in Tukwila and get LTAC feedback. Here are some questions to prompt the discussion. (1) What public safety trends are you seeing in Tukwila? (2) We are thinking about hosting a public safety seminar for Southcenter District property owners and managers late in 2025 or early 2026. Do they think there would be interest?
