HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-08-26 Special Minutes (continued from 8/25/25)Tukwila City Council Hybrid Meeting (On -site and Virtual) MINUTES SPECIAL MEETING Special Meeting August 26, 2025 CALL TO ORDER Mayor McLeod called the Special Meeting of the Tukwila City Council to order at 6,30 p.m ROLL CALL Jennifer Marshall, Deputy City Clerk, called the roll of the Council Present at the meeting were Council President Tosh Sharp (on -site); Mohamed Abdi (on -site), Armen Papyan (on -site), Dennis Martinez (on - site), Hannah Hedrick (virtual), and Verna Seal (on -site). MOVED BY SEAL, SECONDED BY PAPYAN TO EXCUSE THE ABSENCE OF COUNCILMEMBER MCCONNELL. MOTION CARRIED 6-0. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Mayor McLeod stated "The City of Tukwila is ocated on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish people We acknowledge their continuing connections to land waters and culture, We pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging CITY OFFICIALS Thomas McLeod, Mayor, Marty Wine, City Adrninistrator; Pete Mayer, Deputy City Administrator/Parks & Recreation Director, Kari Sand, City Attorney; Nora Gierioff, Community Development Director; Aaron BeMilier, Finance Director Joel Bush, Chief Technology Officer; Eric Dreyer, Police Chief; L a urel Humphrey, Legislative Analyst; Andy Ycun-Barnett, City Clerk; and Jennifer Marshall, Deputy City Clerk, PRESENTATION Council candidate interviews for Position #7. The following applicants were escorted into the Council Chamber and interviewed in the following randomized order a, Sarah Gollum Joe Camacho EXECUTIVE SESSION — To evaluate the qualifications of the candidatesor appointment to elective office — Pursuant to RCW 42,30,110(h), Not to exceed 20 minutes. Mayor McLeod announced the Council would go into Executive Session: To evaluate the qualifications of the candidates for appointment to elective office Pursuant to RCW 42.30.110(1)(h). He noted the total amount of time would be no more than 20 minutes, and no decisions would be made during the Executive Session. Action might be required in the Open Meeting after the Executive Session has concluded. Executve Session End. 7,25 p.m, 7..25 onn, Mayor McLeod reconvened the Special Meeting, NEW BUSINESS a. Discussion and motion to appoint a new Councilmember to Position #7 on the Tukwila City Council. Mayor McLeod asked if the Council was ready to proceed with nominations, then called for nominations from the applicants who were interviewed COUNCILMEMBER ABDI NOMINATED JOE CAMACHO. COUNCILMEMBER PAPYAN NOMINATED GINA BERNHARDT NIELSEN. COUNCIL PRESIDENT SHARP NOMINATED ZIGGY SAMRA COUNCILMEMBER MARTINEZ NOMINATED KRYSTEENA MANN COUNCILMEMBER HEDRICK NOMINATED KATE KRULLER. COUNCILMEMBER SEAL NOMINATED GINA BERNHARDT NIELSEN. Mayor McLeod asked it there were any further nominations MOVED BY SEAL, SECONDED BY MARTINEZ TO CLOSE THE NOMINATION PERIOD. MOTION CARRIED 8-0. Mayor McLeod and Councniernbers thanked all the applicants for their applications and willingness to serve, Mayor McLeod called for a roll call vote, IFirst round of voting:. ABDI JOE CAMACHO PAPYAN GINA BERNHARDT NIELSEN SHARP ZIGGY SAMRA MARTINEZ ZIGGY SAMRA HEDRICK JOE CAMACHO SEAL JOE CAMACHO The Deputy City Clerk noted no candidate received the required four votes; Mayor McLeod opened the floor to further discussion; there was none Second round of voting; ABDI JOE CAMACHO SHARP ZIGGY SAMRA PAPYAN JOE CAMACHO MARTINEZ JOE CAMACHO HEDRICK JOE CAMACHO SEAL JOE CAMACHO The Deputy City Clerk announced Joe Camacho received the required four votes for the pro tempore appointment to Position #6. The motion was withdrawn',. MOVED BY MARTINEZ, SECONDED BY ABDI TO APPOINT JOE CAMACHO AS A PRO TEMPORE TO POSITION #6 ON THE TUKWILA CITY COUNCIL UNTIL THE INCUM µENT, JOVITA MCCONNELL, RETURNS OR RESIGNS; OR UPON CERTIFICATION OF THE NOVEMBER 2027 GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS. MOTION CARRIED 6-0. Mayor McLeod congratulated Joe Cannacho and noted the Oath of Office wiVll be scheduled on or before the next Special Meeting (September 8°f1)1. ADJOURNMENT 7:40 P.M.
