PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a serious and widespread social problem in our nation,
with approximately one third of all female homicide victims being killed by an intimate
partner; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is an epidemic affecting all communities, regardless of age,
socioeconomic status, educational background, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin,
ability, sexual orientation, or gender; and
WHEREAS, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in the United States have suffered severe
physical violence by an intimate partner and it has been estimated that every nine
seconds a woman is beaten by her husband or boyfriend in this country with, in more
than half those instances, children under the age of 12 are present; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila continues to work to improve the overall response to and
the reduction of domestic violence in our region with awareness to the cultural
differences in our community while still enforcing the law;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Thomas McLeod, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, in honor of the
women, children and men who are or have been victims, do hereby proclaim the month
of October, 2025, as:
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
in the City of Tukwila and encourage everyone in our community to take an active role
in supporting victims so they can lead healthy lives safe from violent and abusive
behavior.
