HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-10-09 Proclamation - National Filipino American History MonthOffice of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in 2009, after years of advocacy by Filipino Americans, the United States Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month to celebrate and honor the history, rich culture, and accomplishments of Filipino Americans in the United States. The month of October was chosen for this commemoration because October 18, 1587, marks the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States; and WHEREAS, Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the nation; and WHEREAS, this month we honor the legacy of Filipino American pioneers, whose work explored themes of immigration and the Filipino experience in America; and WHEREAS, The Filipino Chamber of Commerce of the Pacific Northwest initially organized in 1972 and is built on a strong legacy and perseverance that is a testament to the hard work, pride, hospitality, and resilience that Filipinos are known for; and WHEREAS, the Tagalog language adds beauty and value to our cultural diversity; and WHEREAS, Filipino American history is rich with influential voices and movements, including the powerful words of Larry Itliong who said, "We are not just seeking to improve our own condition; we are seeking to build a better society for everyone;" NOW THEREFORE, I, Thomas McLeod, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2025, as: National Filipino American History Month in the City of Tukwila and encourage all community members to learn more about the contributions, cultural heritage and ongoing impact of Filipino Americans.
