Thomas McLeod, Mayor Parks & Recreation Department - Pete Mayer, Director INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM TO: Community Services & Safety Committee CC: Thomas McLeod, City of Tukwila Mayor FROM: Pete Mayer, Parks & Recreation Director BY: David Rosen, Parks & Recreation Analyst DATE: November 4, 2025 SUBJECT: Tukwila Arts Commission 2025 Fall Update BACKGROUND The Tukwila Parks & Recreation Department, as the liaison department to the Tukwila Arts Commission, intends to update the Community Services and Safety Committee on the commission's current operations, work planning, projects, upcoming events and programming, as well as highlights of work done so far in Fiscal Year 2025. The staff member assigned to the Tukwila Arts Commission as the city liaison is Michael May, the Tukwila Parks & Recreation Department's Communications Manager. DISCUSSION 2025 highlights will be shared from across Parks & Recreation's operations as they pertain to arts programming, outreach, upcoming projects, and future planning efforts. Our department continues to be extremely proud of our staff's continuous and dedicated efforts in serving our community as well as the efforts made by our commissioners to advance the goals of art installations and programming being made available for all throughout our community. Work continues throughout the organization and in concert with the Arts Commission to strategically determine project(s) and programming prioritization both in terms of maintaining our current portfolio of public art installations and/or programming as well as planning improvements such as new installations as part of potential and planned capital projects. By 2027, as a result of our work, we want to see in place sustained support for arts in schools. • The Tukwila Teen Art Collective was successfully launched. • 10 Foster High School Students have been recruited for the first cohort. • The teens will meet twice a month during the school year at the Tuwkila Community Center Art Studio. • The collective's mission is to encourage creative youth both in their artistic and community leadership development. • The collective's projects will engage with the Tukwila community further cementing the improtance of art in our community. Tukwila arts By 2033, as a result of arts and culture, Tukwila is a place where artists and arts organizations thrive and their contributions are valued and supported. By 2027, as a result of our work, we want to see established and ongoing public art programs. • The Tukwila Portrait Project saw its first commissioned portrait completed. • The Tuwkila Portrait Project aims to honor residents who have made a positive impact on their community. • Honorees are selected by the community. • The Reverand Jan Bolerjack was selected for her work with housing refugees at her church. • The artist, Gloira Alberto, is an Angolan refugee who once called Jan's church his home. • The Tong -term goal is to have the portrais travel around the city. Accompanying QR codes will give viewers more insight into the honoree and the artist. By 2027, as a result of our work, we want to see established and ongoing public art programs. • In its inaugural year, the Tukwila Farmers Market hosted five art -making pop -ups at its five market days. (July 20, August 3, 17, 31, and September 7. • Art activities were developed for all ages to participate and allowed participants to drop in at will. • Acitivties ranged from collage making to print making. • The market has seven market days planned for 2026. Each will feature an art -making acitivity. By 2027, as a result of our work, we want to see: • An established a robust and engaged community network. • Processes and procedures for funding and grantmaking • The Tukwila Arts Commission extended a grant to the Rainer Symphony for $2000 this summer. • The grant ensures that the symphony retains its ability to continue offering performances at the Foster High School Performing Arts Center. • The grant was offered to the symphony under the condition that it would provide two performances (August 6 and September 24) at the Tukwila Village Farmers Market. • Without the grant stipulations, the Tukwila Village Farmers Market would not have been able to provide on live music at its market days. By 2027, as a result of our work, we want to see arts integrated into city systems & procedures • Sheila Coppola, Vice Chair of the Tukwila Arts Commission, has offered to develop the cover for the 2025 State of the City Report. • Mayor McLeod had requested the commission's support. The commission overhelmingly endorsed the project at its September meeting. • By taking on this important project, the commission will further awareness of the arts in Tukwila.
