Councilmen present were Stan dinkler, A.;': .Thies, Rudolf VJ Legel and m 74atkins The purpose of the meeting was to take up the request of Mr.. M.G. Welk for a business license to wake pre -cast steps in the building owned by Mr. Louie E. Mettler and used by him as a wood working shop. Mayor baker explained that 14r. Welk had previously met with a committee of the °ouncil and had stated the steps woula be cast inside the present building; there would be no smoke, other than that result- ing from a heating stove, no odor and only the noise of a cement mixer and a vibrator, all operating inside the building. iir. Welk said he employed about 13 people and would no doubt have jobs available to local men. Mr. Mettler explained that due to poor health he was obliged_to close his wood- working shop and sell; that his building was only suit- able for a business enterprise; and that in order to save his invest- ment he must sell to some sort of business firm. Near -by property owners expressed a desire that this property be returned to residential status. Mr. baker pointed out, however, that prior to the erection of this builaing, since at that time Tukwila had no Business Code, Mr. Mettler had secured the signatures of near -by property owners allowing him to erect this building. iy this act they zoned this property for business. It was further pointed out that the area has been a semi- business area for some time, since Mr. Gott, Mr. Bryan and Mr Duff are engaged in various business enterprises nearby. After considerable discussion as to whether this new business would benefit or be a detriment to near -by home owners a vote was taken of those interested.. ten voted favorably and one voted against the proposal. It was then moved and carried, by the 0ouncil, that Welk be granted a ''usiness license for the manufacture of pre -cast steps. It was requested that the new owners have as little noise as possible and that the yard be kept orderly. Since the original petition had stipulated that no production work was to take place after 5 P.M. or begore 3 A.M. it was requested these hours be observed. It was further suggested that there be no work on Sunday, if possible. Chas, 0. Laker, Mayor LJis T. Newton, Clerk 69
