HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 1358 - General Election for Advisory Vote on Fireworks Ban 1LA d) a rsoa it of u it a Washington Resolution No. 1358 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON CALLING FOR AN ADVISORY VOTE IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION ON WHETHER OR NOT TO TOTALLY BAN FIREWORKS IN THE CITY. WHEREAS, whether or not to allow the sale and discharge of fireworks in Tukwila has long been a matter of contention among citizens, and WHEREAS, the City Council tried to resolve the issue by holding an informal poll in a February, 1996 Hazelnut, but found the results to be approximately even from those opposing and supporting a ban, and WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to have a more definitive representation of the public will about this issues and believes an advisory vote will give them such; NOW, THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, do hereby resolve as follows: Section 1. Election. The City shall hold an advisory ballot in the November 5, 1996 general election. This vote is advisory only, and the City Council will not be legally bound by its results, but will carefully consider the poll results in making any decision regarding fireworks. Section 2. Ballot title and Explanatory Note. The ballot title and explanatory note will read: Ballot title: CITY OF TUKWILA ADVISORY PROPOSITION NO.1 Should the Tukwila City Council enact an ordinance banning the sale and discharge of all types of fireworks in the city at all times during the year? Yes No Explanatory Note: The ordinances of the City of Tukwila currently allow the sale and discharge of fireworks only on the Fourth of July between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. The .Tukwila City Council has heard many conflicting opinions from citizens as to whether the sale and discharge of fireworks should be totally banned within the City at all times of the year. In order to obtain a definitive public opinion, the Council has placed Advisory Proposition No. 1 on the ballot for voter action. This vote is advisory only. If the City Council decides to enact an ordinance banning the sale and discharge of fireworks during all times of the year, the ban will become effective one year from the date the ordinance is passed. If the Council decides not to enact a ban, the current restrictions will continue to apply.
