A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA,
WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE LOCATION OF AN INTERCITY
PASSENGER RAIL STATION IN TUKWILA, AND COMMITTING LOCAL
RESOURCES TO FACILITATE STATION PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION.
WHEREAS, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) was directed to develop "high
quality Intercity passenger rail service...through incremental upgrading of the existing [Amtrak] service;" following the
completion and release of the High Speed Ground Transportation Study in April of 1993; and
WHEREAS, the Pacific Northwest Rail Corridor program was developed by WSDOT to carry out this directive
and was incorporated in Washington State's Transportation Plan which was released in 1996; and
WHEREAS, the development of new passenger rail stations as part of the Intercity Rail line is a critical element
in this plan to enhance passenger services; and
WHEREAS, the need was identified for an Intercity Rail station in South King County between Tacoma and
Seattle; and
WHEREAS, a study was released by Amtrak in December of 1997, which evaluated several locations in
South King County in terms of their ability to support ridership and provide linkages to other transportation modes;
and
WHEREAS, the study by Amtrak determined that Tukwila is the preferred site for an Intercity Rail passenger
station and offers the greatest potential for a light rail connection to Sea -Tac Airport; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila is currently working to develop a multimodal transit facility which could
accommodate a passenger rail station; and
WHEREAS, the location of a passenger rail station in Tukwila is consistent with the City's comprehensive
plan and the goals to continue the development of its Urban Center;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, HEREBY
RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The City of Tukwila endorses and supports the findings in the Amtrak Station Site Analysis (Dec.
17, 1997) which concludes that Tukwila is the preferred site for an Intercity Rail station location in South King County.
Section 2. The City does hereby commit its local resources and also pledges to pursue supplemental funds to
facilitate the development of an Intercity Rail station in conjunction with a commuter rail station and multimodal
center in Tukwila.
