Pound the chisel, using a three (3) pound sledge on the score line, until the unit splits. Always wear eye protection when splitting stones. If many cuts are needed, a saw may be the easiest way to get precision cuts. 4. Backfilling: After each course is laid, backfill behind the wall with 3/4" gravel or drain rock (Photo G). This step is important to promote drainage and to prevent soil from leaching through the wall face. As an additional safeguard, a geotextile can be used between the backfill and the drain rock. 5. Top Course: A recommended option for finishing the wall is to secure the top course with construction adhesive (Photo H). Apply a bead of the adhesive with a caulking gun. Lay the top course down on the bead and press firmly. Finish backfilling behind the wall. The straight -sided units make good top courses for straight walls, giving the wall a finished look.
