RESOLUTION NO. 116
A RESOLUTION OP THE TOWN OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DECLARING
ITS OPPOSITION TO THE PLACING OF AN ARTERIAL STOP SIGN, BY
THE WASHINGTON STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT, AT_THE INTERSECTION
OF WASHINGTON STATE HIGHWAY 5 -M AND WASHINGTON STATE HIGHWAY
1 -L LOCATED WITHIN THE TOWN OF TUKWILA.
WHEREAS, the Town Uouncil respectfully requests the removal of
the Stop sign recently placed, by the Washington State Highway
Department, at the'intersection of Washington State Highway 5 -M and
Washington State Highway 1 -L, to allow traffic to proceed as before,
WHEREAS, an extremely dangerous situation has been created by
the placing of this sign, due to the position of the bridge and the
angles by which 5 -M and 1 -L approach it, and
WHEREAS, no Town Official was consulted as to the placing of the
sign or advised of the placing of said sign, and
WHEREAS, at peak traffic hours vehicles are lined up on State
Highway 5 -M for several miles, blocking all roads intersecting 5 -M,
WHEREAS, it would be practically impossible to move any emergency
equipment, such as fire, police or ambulances, and
WHEREAS, Tukwila Town Officials have received numerous oral and
written protests, blaming the Town of Tukwila for placing the sign,and
WHEREAS, a great majori *y of the people, not only in Tukwila but
also in the whole valley, are being inconvenienced and penalized 24
hours a day so that a minority might race through the bridge for a
short period of time each day, and
WHEREAS, in order to not become involved in the long line up,
created by the sign, people are having to travel many miles out of
their way, adding time and expense to their trip, and
WHEREAS, Public Transportation id being unnecessarily delayed,
placing added expense on the carriers, which must be passed on to tie
consumers and users, and
WHEREAS, the tourist season and the Longacres race Track meeting
will aggravate the situation until traffic will virtually come to a
stand still, and
WHEREAS, the i.erchants and Shop owners along 5 -M have already
lost considerable business due to the fact that it is impossible to
cross over or re -enter the highway from their establishments, during
the peak hours, and many of their sales are made by people who stop
off on their way home, and
WHEREAS, a bad psycological attitude is attained by drivers, who,
after sitting in line for a length of time, and at last clearing the
bridge, are inclined to speed and drive more recklessly than usual in
order to make up for lost time, and
WHEREAS, this detouring of motorists, trying to avoid this un-
necessary traffic tie -up, must, of necessity, overcrowd already over-
loaded hgihways in the immediate vicinity, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Tukwila has existed for 51 years with this
intersection and no Stop sign has ever been needed, and now, suddenly,
one. is placed there for no visible good reason, and
WHEREAS, it is felt that up to now this situation at the bridge
has been handled the best way possible by the drivers themselves,
through common courtesy and understanding, r_
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Tukwila Town gouncil
That the Town Council oppose the placing of the arterial Stop sign at
the intersection of Washington State Highway No. 5 -NI and Washington
State Highway No. 1 -L, which sign was placed there on May S, 1959,
by the Washington State Highway Department, and do unanimously
petition the Washington State Highway Department to remove the arterial
Stop sign described above, and to do everything within its power to
replace the present outmoded bridge.
PASSED, unanimously, this 13th day of May, 1959.
