HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 0126 - City of Seattle Disperse All Effluent by PipelineRESOLUTION NO. 126 AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN OF TUKWILA, TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, MARCH 14, 1960. WHEREAS; The Town of Tukwila feels that the Metro Sewage Plan to rid Lake Washington and the Duwamish River Drainage Area of domestic sewage and industrial wastes is a project worthy of the continued support of all affected areas; and WHEREAS; the adoption of the enabling act by the voters gave Metro Officials the power to assess sewage service fees to ac- complish all of the benefits promised; and WHEREAS, the Executive Director, with the approval of the Metro Commissioners, now proposes to transport sewage from the Lake Wash- ington area to the Kenton Treatment Plant, then dumping the effluent into the Duwamish River within the Town of Tukwila, thereby correct- ing the sewage problems in one area but increasing the problems in the other area; and WHEREAS, National, State, City and Town agencies have declared the Duwamish River Valley to be the logical site of future industrial expansion for the Puget Sound Area. Therefore the dumping of effluent would make the Duwamish River into an open sewage ditch, jeopardizing future industrial development along the Duwamish River Valley; and WHEREAS, without proper sewage disposal for the Duwamish Valley Drainage area this Staters largest potential industrial area will become blighted, depriving the Metropolitan area of thousands of jobs and the tax base for many communities; and WHEREAS, the recreational value of the Green- Duwamish River system would be completely destroyed by short sighted sewage disposal "economy plans and WHEREAS, even with the completion of the Howard A. Hanson Dam the Duwamish Valley drainage system will still have flood control problems which must be coped with by the local people and industries; the effluent to be added, in any amount, can do nothing but compound the problem. NOW, THEREFQ'RE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town of Tukwila and its various organizations demand that the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle fulfill completely their obligation to the voters by dis- persing all effluent by pipeline to deep salt water. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these Public Officials oppose any other substitute plan as a direct affront to the decision of the voters. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town of Tukwila and its various organizations endorse and support Emergency Resolution No. 1 of the Washington State Sportsmen's Council enacted in convention at Vancouver, Washington, on March 13, 1960. We further request tha aid of all citizens of the. State of Washington to participate with us in protecting the purity of all the waters of our State.
