HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOW 2013-03-25 Item 4A - Powerpoint Presentation Shown at Meeting - Tukwila International Boulevard Revitalization StrategyTIB Revitalization Strategy 2013 Community Renewal RCW35.8i • Law allows the creation of urban renewal areas within cities to revive areas struggling with crime and blight. • The purpose of this legislation is to eliminate social liabilities, increase sound growth, reduce crime and improve livability. • Redevelopment of these areas can occur through acquisition of blighted areas or portions thereof; demolition and removal of buildings and improvements; making land available for development or redevelopment by private enterprise or public bodies. Community Renewal Con't Community Renewal has been a successful strategy for crime reduction and revitalization. If the property can not be acquired through negotiation, the law gives the City the power to condemn the property for fair market value. In 2000 the City designated a community renewal area, which encompasses the area between 140th and 146th of Tukwila International Blvd. This was the process through which the City acquired the land for Tukwila Village, which is set to start construction very soon. This showed foresight on the part of the Council, as through the City's strategic planning process it was identified that improving TIB was a high priority for the community. Site Selection Staff has been working to determine which sites give the City the biggest impact if acquired . This analysis included, PD, Fire, Code Enforcement and Economic Development.
