HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilService 2013-04-22 MinutesCity of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, Washington 98188 Jim Haggerton, Mayor April 22, 2013 The following commissioners attended the regularly scheduled meeting of the Tukwila Civil Service Commission: Ron Johnston and Dennis Sivak. Others in attendance were Police Chief Mike Villa, and Stephanie Brown, Human Resources Director. CALL TO ORDER 5:02 p.m. Chair Johnston called the meeting to order, APPROVAL OF MINUTES GENERAL BUSINESS JOHNSTON REQUESTED TO HOLD APPROVAL OF THE MARCH 4, 2013 MINUTES UNTIL THE MAY 13, 2013 MEETING. SIVAK WAS NOT PRESENT AT THE MARCH 4, MEETING AND DID FEEL HE SHOULD APPROVE THE MINUTES. Stephanie Brown, Human Resources Director reminded the commissioners to begin review of the current civil service rules so that they can be prepared for a comprehensive review /revision for adoption during the 3rd quarter. POLICE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Police Chief, Mike Villa reported that he has one officer out on a long term injury; and that another officer who had been out for almost a year, returned to full duty. He shared that Officer Don Dart would be retiring from the Department and that his retirement celebration would be held on April 24, at 2:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers. He added that there are two candidates in background; one in the academy; and five officers in the field training (FTO) program. Chief Villa stated that one of the officers was unsuccessful in completing the FTO program and was let go, and that the others are progressing well. There are currently two openings, and that one lateral applicant withdrew. City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, Washington 98188 Jim Haggerton, Mayor Certification of Police Sergeant Eligibility List Chief Villa provided the commissioners with a brief overview on how applications for Lateral Police Officer are pre- screened. He also announced to the commissioners that he promoted Sanjay Prasad to Police Sergeant effective May, 1, 2013. Stephanie Brown, Human Resources Director informed the Commissioners that the Police Sergeant Assessment Center was held on March 12, and that 7 candidates passed the test and had their names added to the eligibility list. The current eligibility list, originality set to expire on July 15, 2013, will need to be terminated early as the list has dwindled down to 2 names. The Chief has the discretion to call for a new test and a new list when the current list has fewer than 3 names. Candidates that tested in 2012 were notified of this, and given the opportunity to test on March 12th. MOVED BY SIVAK, AND SECONDED BY JOHNSTON TO APPROVE THE NEW POLICE SERGEANT ELIGIBILITY LIST, EI'r'ECITVE APRIL 22, 2013, AND EXPIRE THE JULY 14, 2012 LIST. May Meeting The Commissioners set the next Civil Service Commission meeting for Monday, May 13, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. ADJOURNMENT 5:20pm MOVED BY SIVAK, SECONDED BY JOHNSTON THAT THE REGULAR MEETING BE ADJOURNED.
