HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 1484 - Support Highline School District General Obligation (GO) Bond ILA, 1 tits. 1908 it ofTukwila Washington Resolution No. L� A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE HIGHLINE SCHOOL DISTRICT $189.5 MILLION GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND FOR NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION, SAFETY UPGRADES AND AN EMERGENCY CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND. WHEREAS, 84 percent of the Highline School District schools were built in the 1950s or earlier and no longer meet current minimum health and safety standards; and WHEREAS, technology has grown at an alarming rate and the schools must be upgraded, modernized and renovated to meet projected needs; and WHEREAS, passage of the bond will enable construction of 7 elementary schools and the renovation of 1 high school, provide safety upgrades to Memorial Field, and provide $7 million for an emergency capital improvement fund; and WHEREAS, the state will provide an estimated $25 million in matching funds to the district upon completion of the proposed bond projects, enabling the construction of another new school; and WHEREAS, Highline School District, Port of Seattle, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and State of Washington have entered into an agreement to repair and upgrade 15 of the 31 schools most affected by aircraft noise from Seattle Tacoma International Airport; and WHEREAS, the agreement provides $200 million from the four entities and each organization must secure its portion of the $200 million; and WHEREAS, the Port of Seattle will use existing revenues, Washington State Governor Gary Locke will ask the Legislature to authorize a pass through of $50 million in sales tax revenue, and the FAA will provide $50 million in construction grants; and WHEREAS, the bond measure includes $50 million from the Highline School District, and a partnership between communities, government and schools is integral to thriving, active neighborhoods and the local economy; and WHEREAS, the Tukwila City Council strongly supports new schools and upgraded educational facilities, and the aforementioned agreement; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: The City Council of the City of Tukwila supports the Highline School District bond measure for new school construction, safety upgrades and an emergency capital HIGHLINE SCH DIST BOND 2 02.DOC improvements fund; and urgently calls upon all eligible voting residents to support the school bond issue in the Special Election to be held on March 12, 2002.
