provide the necessary air space for the
effective use of Reflectix. Strips of 1" to
11/2" wide Reflectix works well as a
spacer.
Reflectix BP can then be cut to the
proper size and wrapped around the duct, securing it with Reflectix Tape.
Reflectix has an R -5.6 for this duct application.
Also Available In

Simply spiral Reflectix Duct Wrap around your duct work overlapping
approximately 1" as you go, Securely tape with Reflectix Reflective Foil Tape around

Crawl Space
An uninsulated crawl space
causes cold floors and higher
heating bills. When properly
installed, Reflectix Is also a
complete vapor and radon barrier.

Reflectix Staple Tab
Reflectix has an R•16.8 VALUE for crawl space applications.
Installation:
• Inspect your crawl space and make any needed repairs before installing Reflectix.
• Check your crawl space to determine the amount of work space, and whether
your floor joists are 16' or 24' on•centers.
• Determine if there are water pipes and heating ducts which hang below the
floor joists. These will need to be insulated, and Reflectix Duct Wrap and
Pipe Wrap are designed especially for this use.
• Start at the.end of the house and face staple Reflectix to the bottom of
the first floor joist, leaving enough length so the insulation can be pulled
up to the band board and stapled.
• Then start the next run face stapling to the bottom of the floor joist. Overlap
tabs and seal with foil tape to create a vapor barrier. At the ends, staple
up to the sub•floor or bandboard. SEEU.LUSi1?Ar1ON
• Continue across the floor installing Reflectix. No need to wrap water pipes
or duct work when they are between floor joists. Reflectix will provide
adequate insulation without extra wrapping.
• The above R•ualue Includes a 4.55 value for a reflective air film.)
Lineal Pipe Wrap
To help prevent pipes from freezing, wrap them with Reflectix Insulation.
Cut a length of pipe wrap from the roll that will be easy to handle in your working
area. Place the white side of the insulation next to the pipe, then pre•shape the
insulation by wrapping it around the pipe. This will make the taping easier and
help form a better seal. Then remove
the protective backing from the tape and
overlap the edge so It just covers the
tape area. On small pipes this will
produce a loose fit, and on larger pipes
a snug fit. Insulation value is not affected
by loose or tight fit.
Do not leave any exposed pipe or
space where air can enter between the
pipe and the wrap. This procedure
provides an air space between the
pipe and the wrap that will aid the
insulation value.
Reflectix has an R -4 value for this pipe application.

Reflex -Sill
Recent studies conclude that es much
as 40% of home heating costs can be
attributed to air infiltration. One
commonly overlooked source of heat
loss, not to mention the beginnings of
structural degeneration, takes place
when the sill plate and the foundation
meet.
Reflex -Sill (cont.)
With the use of Reflectix Reflex.Sill, these problems can be economically and
permanently resolved. Reflex.Sill forms its own seal and conforms to correct the
structural imperfections that often exist between the sill plate and the foundation.
To install, simply roll it out and lay It between the sill plate and foundation. No
need to staple or glue. Cut to length with common household scissors. (For gaps
between foundation and sill plate greater than ' / „” double the thickness.) Be sure
to cut holes in the Reflex.Sill to fit over the anchor bolts.
Reflex•SIII will not deteriorate and is impervious to moisture. It will
not encourage rodent and insect infestation since it does not provide
nesting properties.

What about R- Values?
Reflectix performs as a radiant barrier in this use, rather than
as an insulation. R- Values do not describe a material's insulating
effectiveness as a radiant barrier.
Ventilation:
Good ventilation in your attic increases your comfort and helps the materials
of your house last longer. Be sure not to block ventilation paths when you lealall

Other Uses
Garage Doors
One often overlooked source of heat
loss is through uninsulated or aged
garage doors Because of the
comparatively large opening a garage
door offers. the potential for heat loss
is substantial. Conversely. in the summer
months, an uninsulated garage door can
be a tremendous magnet for the
sun's rays.
Installation is as simple as stapling
Reflectix directly to the inside of the
garage door and taping the seams. For
maximum performance, secure
spacers to the garage door at Intervals of e very 2' or 3' and staple Reflectix to the
spacers. 'rape seams where Reflectix meets to Insure optimal performance.
You area now ready to enjoy your garage free of drafts or excessive heat. Think
of the additional savings afforded to those homes with attached garages! (Don't
want to staple into garage door? Consider Reflectix Hook and Loop Cloth
Tape fasteners — rapid Installation with easy removal!)
Window Covers
Reflectix is excellent as a temporary
or permanent window covering to
prevent heat loss in winter or
overheating from direct sunlight in the
summer. It will provide a more
comfortable living environment while
reducing your utility bills.
To install, cut Reflectix to the proper
window size and press the material
snugly between frames.
Reflectix may also be hung from
curtain rods, sewn into drapery maternal
or applied with Reflectix Hook and Loop
Cloth Tape.

Reflectix Hook and Loop Cloth Tape
(Available by the foot, or in %" x 10' prepackaged rolls)
Reflectix Hook and Loop Cloth Tape offers a creative alternative to nailing,
stapling, or gluing for the consumer who wishes to use Reflectix reflective insulation
on a seasonal basis. Hook and loop sets are recommended for permanent
applications as well
Suggested uses include direct attachment to glass, wood, metal, or other materials
where stapling, gluing or nailing may not be advisable.
To attach, keep opposing hook & loop halves together to ensure proper alignment.
Peel off paper backing and press to surface. Next, press your Reflectix reflective
insulation to the opposing side.
Consider the benefits of utilizing this application in large picture windows, sliding
patio doors, sky lights, etc.
Reflectix Foil Tape (2" x 30' or 150')
This 2" wide aluminum tape is specially designed to adhere well to foil. It serves
as the best means to join ends of Reflectix BP or ST rolls together because it ensures
a continuous reflective surface. The use of ordinary adhesive tape would create
"windows" for radiant energy to pass through.
Product Information
Reflectix'" is a 5 /l6.inch thick
reflective insulation which comes in rolls
and is made up of seven layers. Two
outer layers of aluminum foil reflect
most of the heat which hits them. Each
layer of foil is bonded to a tough layer
of polyethylene for strength. Two inner
layers of bubblepack resist heal flow,
while a center layer of polyethylene gives
Reflectix" additional strength. .

Reflectix blocks the biggest single
source of heat transfer ...radiation.
Approximately 75% of the
total heat transfer in buildings
occurs through radiant heat,
according to an analysis by
Professor E.R. Queer of Penn
State.
Reflectix has a high 97%
reflectivity against radiant
heat.
Radiant heat bounces off
Rellectix's reflective surfaces,
which are backed up with air
spaces. Since air conducts
less heat than mass materials,
energy loss is kept to
minimum.
U Radiation Conduction •Convection
HOW REFLECTIX INSULATION WORKS
What About R- Values
There are 3 basic modes of heat transfer — radiant (Infrared), conductive and
convective. Conduction and convection are minimized whenever heat transfer
is stopped within a structure. FOIL IS A RADIANT ENERGY BARRIER.
R- Values are a measure of the thermal resistance of a product in the conductive
mode of heat transfer. They serve no purpose in rating a product's ability to reflect
radiant heat energy.
3 FORMS OF HEAT
Conduction. By passing from
molecule to neighboring molecule, heat
can move through a solid object to an
adjoining one, provided the two are
touching. This is called conduction It
is by conduction that heat escapes
through an uninsulated house wall.
Generally, the denser the material of the
wall or object, the more quickly the heat
can move: concrete, for example, is a
better heat conductor than wood which
is less dense,
Radiation. Like light, heat is
transmitted by electromagnetic wave
motion. This kind of heat transfer is
called radiation. Through radiation,
heat can jump from warm objects to
cooler ones without warming the air in
• between. The cool object absorbs some
of the energy radiated by a warmer
object and reflects the remainder. It is
by radiation that the sun can warm your
wall even on a frosty day.
Convection. Air motion can carry
heat from warmer surfaces to cooler
ones, This is called convection. As
air warms, it expands, becomes lighter,
and rises. Then, as it gives off heat to
surrounding objects, it cools, contracts,
becomes denser, and sinks again. In an
enclosed space such as a room, heat
forms convective currents of rising
warm air and falling cool air. When such
currents develop between the structural
framing members of your wall or roof,
quite a lot of heat can pass out from
the interior wall or ceiling to the exterior
wall or roof (or vice versa, when the
outside temperature is high).
Only when air has room enough to
move and establish currents, however,
does convection take place. If trapped
in small spaces or cavities such as those
in a sweater's knit or a piece of
polystyrene, air becomes a good
insulator, helping to prevent the transfer
of heat.

Why Does Reflectix Have Three R- Values?
R -value is a measure of resistance to direct conduction of heat, and is a good
measure of the effectiveness of mass insulation. The greater the mass, the higher
the R•value and the more effective most other insulating materials become. Properly
installed foil insulation, however, reflects 97% of the radiant heat to which it Is
exposed ...a factor not matched by common mass insulation. nor measured
directly by R- values.
Therefore, while reflectivity remains constant, Reflectix insulation provides a
secondary benefit of resistance to conduction (loss of heat through absorption) to
varying degrees of effectiveness depending on whether Its placement would be
affected by Down, Up or Side Heat Flow. (See chart on page 3.)
