AN ORDINANCE RECREATING THE TUKWILA
PLANNING COMMISSION, PRESCRIBING ITS DUTIES,
AUTHORITY, AND PROCEDURE, AND REPEALING
ORDINANCE NO. 1112 AND ORDINANCE NO. 1150.
WHEREAS, the residential population and corporate limits of the City have grown
due to recent annexations, and
WHEREAS, both current and newly annexed Tukwila residents have expressed an
interest to become involved in the community by participating in city government, and
WHEREAS, many residents have asked to serve the community by seeking
appointments to the Planning Commission, and
WHEREAS, the recommendations and decisions of the Planning Commission have
an impact on the character and quality of life for all residents of the City of Tukwila, and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes there should be more opportunities for
Tukwila residents to serve on the Planning Commission, and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds it appropriate that the_ Planning Commission
membership should reflect the increase in residentiaTpopulation and new city boundaries.
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA,
WASHINGTON, DO HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Creation. Pursuant to the authority conferred by Chapter 35A.63 of Ch.
119, Laws of 1967, Ex.Sess., as amended by Ch. 81, Laws of 1969, Ex. Sess., there is created
a City Planning Commission, consisting of seven members who shall be appointed by the
Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
Section 2. Membership. Planning Commission members shall reside within the
corporate limits of the City of Tukwila on the day of that member's appointment to said
commission. Members shall be selected from a cross section of the residential and business
community representing different occupations, trades, activities and geographical areas to
provide a balanced community spirit. Members who become non residents during their
term of office shall remain on the commission no more than 90 days thereafter.
Section 3. Powers. Duties. The Planning Commission shall be the principal planning
advisory body for matters relating to land use, comprehensive planning and zoning. They
shall have such other powers and duties contained in RCW 35A.63.
Section 4. Terms of Office. The present appointed members of the Planning
Commission shall remain in office for the balance for their presently existing terms. Future
terms of office will be for a period of four years and shall expire at midnight on March 31 of
the appropriate year. When a vacancy occurs on the commission, appointment for that
position shall be for four years or the remainder of the unexpired term whichever is shorter.
Section 5. Vacancies Removal Selection. Vacancies occurring otherwise than
through the expiration of terms shall be filled for the unexpired terms. Members may be
removed, after public hearing, by the Mayor, with the approval of the City Council, for
inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office. Notice of the charge and pendency of
the hearing with respect to the removal of a member of the planning commission shall be
given by mail addressed to the residence of the accused member at least five days before the
date of such hearing. The members shall be selected without respect to political affiliations
and they shall serve without compensation; provided, however, they may be reimbursed for
expenses necessarily incurred in performing their official duties.
Section 6. Oreanization. The Planning Commission shall adopt rules of procedure
not inconsistent with state law.
Section 7. Minutes. Minutes of Planning Commission meetings shall be distributed
to the City Council not more than ten days after each meeting of the commission. Further,
when an item is to be discussed by the Council and the Commission minutes are pertinent,
those minutes should be supplied to the Council in time to be read before Council
consideration.
Section 8. Repealer. Ordinance Numbers 1112 and 1150 are hereby repealed.
Section 9. Effective Date. This ordinance or a summary thereof shall be published in
the official newspaper of the City, and shall take effect and be in full force five (5) days after
passage and publication as provided by law.

ORDINANCE NO. 1112 AND ORDINANCE NO. 1150.
On Anril 2. 1990 the City Council of the City of Tukwila passed Ordinance
No. 1560 creating the Tukwila Planning Commission, establishing provisions for
Membership, Power and Duties, Terms of Office, Vacancies, Organization, Minutes, and
providing for an effective date.
The full text of this ordinance will be mailed without charge to anyone who submits a
written request to the City Clerk of the City of Tukwila for a copy of the text.
