HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrd 0982 - Amend Sign Code (Repealed by Ord 1274) Prel' Mary Amen 6/28/76 t:tri CITY OF TUK WASHINGTON SUBSTITUTE REPEALED u^ ORDINANCE NO. 982 9(9 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE TUKWILA SIGN CODE BY AMENDING SUBSECTIONS 19.08.090, 19.12.070 (L) AND ADDING A NEW CHAPTER 19.22 TO TITLE 19 OF THE TUKWILA MUNICIPAL CODE AND AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 773. WHEREAS, it was brought to-the attention of the City of Tukwila in a letter dated March 24, 1976, by Gust S. Doces, that there were problems in the Tukwila Sign Code as stated in Title 19 of the Tukwila Municipal Code, and; WHEREAS, the Tukwila City Council considered the matter at a regular meeting on April 5, 1976, and referred the matter to the Planning Commission to review with a 60 day time period to respond, and; WHEREAS, the Planning Commission did consider the matter in a public hearing on May 27, 1976, and made recommendation thereon to the Tukwila City Council, and; WHEREAS, the Tukwila City Council has considered the recommendation of the Planning Commission. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Internal Informational Signs. Internal informational signs means signs giving directional information or identifying specific use areas and which are necessary to maintain the orderly internal use of the premises, such as those signs which identify employee parking, shipping, clearance or which restrict, as opposed to mere identification of, access /egress. Not included in this definition are signs which are not directly related to an identified need for orderly internal use of the property and off premise or portable signs. Upon application, the Planning Commission may authorize a sign which will resolve a locational or traffic hazard problem. Such sign must comply with all the regulations established in Chapter 19.22. Section 2. That subsection 19.12.070 (L) of the Tukwila Municipal Code and Ordinance No. 773 to be amended as follows: 6)-- M4see11aeeeas- 4pferfflat4ep- signs;- as- def4ned- 4n Seetlee 19 Section 19.12.070 (L). A maximum of four internal informational signs, as defined in Section 19.08.090 and as regulated in Chanter 19.22. Section 3. That Title 19 of the Tukwila Municipal Code and Ordinance No. 773 be amended by adding a new Chapter 19.22 to the Tukwila Municipal Code as follows: Chapter 19.22 INTERNAL INFORMATIONAL SIGNS Sections: 19.22.010 General 19.22.020 Copy restricted 19.22.030 Wall mounted restrictions 19.22.040 Freestanding restrictions 19.22.050 Nonconforming Signs Time limit for removal 19.22.060 Compliance 19.22.010 General. A maximum of four internal informational signs, as defined in Section 19.08.090 shall be exempt from the permit requirements of this Title; PROVIDED, however, all such signs must conform to the design and placement regulations contained in this Chanter and each sign in excess of four shall require a permit and separate fee as provided for in Chapter 19.12. 19.22.020 Copy restricted. The information, or copy, displayed by or on any internal informational sign shall be limited to only those letters and /or symbols necessary to convey, in as brief a manner as is reasonably possible, the required message and shall neither identify or advertise, in any manner, the facility occupying the premises nor goods or services available or hours of operation. 19.22.030 Wall mounted Restrictions. Each wall mounted sign shall be permanently affixed to a wall on a plane parallel to that wall and shall not exceed six square feet. 19.22.040 Freestanding Restrictions. Each freestanding internal informational sign shall be erected in a permanent manner and shall be designed and located in accordance with the following restrictions: a. Freestanding signs shall not exceed an overall height of five feet above average grade of adjacent street or driveway. b. The message conveyed by a freestanding sign may be located on a background area not to exceed four square feet; provided a double -face sign may not exceed eight square feet. -2- c. Freestanding signs which exceed three feet in overall height above the average grade of a street or driveway intersection shall be set back at least ten feet from such street or driveway intersection. d. All freestanding signs shall be located in a landscaped area or decora- tive base. e. Freestanding signs may be illuminated only by exterior ground level light- ing or by use of reflectorized copy. 19.22.050 Nonconforming Signs Time limit for removal. Any sign which becomes nonconforming by the content of this chapter shall be brought into conformance or be removed in accordance with Section 19.28.030. 19.22.060 Compliance. The building official may order the removal of any internal informational sign which does not conform to the regulations of this Chapter. Such order shall be in writing and mailed by certified mail, return receipt requested, to the owner or manager of the business or activity being conducted upon the premises on which the sign is located. Those signs identified in the order shall, within ten days from date of receipt of the order, be brought into conformance with the requirements of this Chapter or removed. Upon failure to comply with the order within the ten day period, the City of Tukwila may take such actions as may be deemed necessary to insure compliance with the provisions of this Code. Section 4. Title 19 of the Tukwila Municipal Code and Ordinance No. 773 are both hereby amended to reflect the changes set forth above.
