HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 1500 - Support Referendum 51 Transportation Taxes and Fees G) 4 y 190S T City of Washington Resolution No. 1.506) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING PASSAGE OF STATE REFERENDUM 51, FINANCING TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS THROUGH TRANSPORTATION TAXES AND FEES AT THE NOVEMBER 5, 2002 GENERAL ELECTION. WHEREAS, the Legislature passed House Bill 2969 authorizing new taxes and fees for transportation improvements; and WHEREAS, HB 2969 directs the Secretary of State to place the referendum on the General Election ballot in November; and WHEREAS, in the past 20 years, two million more vehicles have been added to our roads and the amount of freight and goods traveling throughout the state has doubled; and WHEREAS, the ability to move people and goods on our transportation system is essential to the livability and economic vitality of our state; and WHEREAS, there have been no increases in the State gas tax since 1991 to provide funding for major state transportation improvements and the state has realized a reduction of 21 in overall state funding for transportation as a result of initiatives; and WHEREAS, the unfunded need for transportation improvements in the State has grown to a level of $150 billion over the next 20 years as determined by the Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission on Transportation; and WHEREAS, a well- functioning transportation system is essential to retaining and attracting companies that provide economic viability and family -wage jobs to the Puget Sound region and the State of Washington; and WHEREAS, R -51 will guarantee money for every city and county to help fix potholes, repair dangerous road conditions and improve the safety of our citizens; and WHEREAS, R -51. will require that quarterly audits be conducted to ensure all R -51 revenues are spent properly and projects are delivered on time and on budget; and WHEREAS, funding from Referendum 51 would contribute to necessary transportation improvements that will provide significant mobility and economic benefits for the citizens, employers and visitors of Tukwila; and WHEREAS, in a discussion at their August 26 Council Meeting the City Council agreed it was important to support transportation funding to address the thousands of dangerous bridges, roads, and highways in our state; and WHEREAS, Tukwila would receive approximately $44,920 per year for 10 years from the passage of Referendum 51; and Ref 51 2nd version 913102.doc WHEREAS, passage of Referendum 51 would directly benefit Tukwila residents and businesses through improvements to the I -405 and SR -167 interchange; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: The City Council hereby declares its support for and encourages approval of State Referendum 51, which will be presented to the voters at the November 5, 2002 State General Election.
