Gross Structural Engineers Re: Metro Media Fiber Coil Rack WA. 207 % First Ave South Suite 250 Do z- Seattle, WA T - R I.L. GROSS STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS BUILDi!NCa DEPARTMENT I am writing this letter to summarize our findings and analysisdi the support structure for the fiber optic cable storage units at Metro Media in Tu water, WA. have based the analysis and subsequent findings upon the plans originally approved for the construction of this unit along with the photographs provided by Mr. Thompson. It is also understood that the frame was designed by Mr. Samuel Roskin P.E. of Seattle, The fiber coil rack is a steel framed structure constructed by Hurlen Construction Company. The rack consists of 8 "x 6 "x' /4" tube steel beams running in the north -south direction, and 4 "x 4 "x '/4" tube steel purlins, columns, and diagonal braces. The purlins spaced at 30" o.c. span in the east -west direction and rest on the top of the beam, with a 1 /4 " fillet weld on each side. The columns are approximately 11' -1" in height and rest on 5/8" thick base plates. The diagonal bracing is placed on both the north and south ends of the rack, as well as one bay of both the east and west sides. The braces are attached directly to the columns at the top and bottom using a 1 /4" weld on each side of the brace. After analyzing both the plans for the support structure and the photographs it appears that the as built condition is constructed according to the original design. Also, after checking the member stresses of the frame, the calculations support the original frame design as sound and adequate to support the given dead and live Toads as stated on the drawings. The frame was analyzed for both gravity loading and seismic forces based upon 1997 UBC criteria for Seismic Zone 3. (206)623 -0769 fax:(206)623 -9081 z w r Q L J U 00 co CI W= J 1.- N LL WO Q co Y _ . w ~ U O N O H w W .. z w U p Memo to Ron Thompson March 11, 2003 Page 2 The welded connections for the structure appear to be consistent with the design, and are adequate for the demand. The diagonal braces, purlins, beams, columns, and base plates all proved to be capable of resisting greater capacities than they will be subjected to under the current condition. One area of concern is the anchors at the column base plates. While the 4" expansion bolts specified are adequate to resist the overturning forces, it is impossible to verify their actual depth of embedment without removing and replacing them. However, the gravity loading of the frame and its contents are adequate to resist the overturning forces created by a seismic event so long as the frame's trays are filled to 25% of their capacity. The minimal amount of residual loading that can be expected to be applied to the expansion bolts should be within their capacity even if their embedment depth is less than 4 ". The primary function of the anchors will be to provide shear resistance at the base, for which they should be adequate without additional inspection. Ron, I hope this memo is adequate for your current needs. If you have any questions or comments, or need further assistance with this project, please feel free to call. Mark Speidel I.L. C. Roskin Drawing No. GENERAL NOTES 1. All work is to be performed in a workmanlike manner per the applicable sections of the latest edition of the Uniform Building Code. Comply with OSHA/WISHA regulation. 2. The Design Criteria used in designing the purlins, the beams, the diagonal braces and the columns was based upon the dead weight of the steel items /shapes plus the dead weight of the fully loaded cable trays. In designing the steel frame it was assumed that the cable trays shown on sheet TSS -22 •show the total linear footage of the cable trays which are to be installed both at present and in the future. For the assumed total weight per linear foot of the in use cable trays (whether stacked in two layers or as a single layer) see sheet TSS -22. 3. The design criteria used for the lateral force (the design load) due to seismic activity called for the steel frame to resist 50% of the-full weight of the steel beams, the purlins and the cable trays suspended off the purlins. 4. The allowable soil pressure (beneath the existing 5" thick ground slab) was assumed to be not less than 3,500 psf. 5. The Contractor is advised that because of reasons of clarity of presentation safety features (such as ladders, barricades, signs, etc.) have been omitted from these drawings. The Contractor shall provide all required safety features /items. 6. The method of suspending the cable trays off the steel framing is to be determined by the Others /Owner. The proposed method of attachment of the new cable trays to the steel shapes shall not compromise nor weaken the stee4e E APPROVED FEMUR inu LOOS SAMUEL C.
