CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 5:32 p.m.
Welcome and Overview
Councilmember and Advisory Committee Chair Quinn opened the meeting with an overview of the
Tukwila Tree and Environment Committee, referencing Resolution 1767, which established the
. He described the meeting process that
occurred September 2012 - May 2013, explained the purpose of the work session, and introduced
Committee members. He also stated that while there would be no public comment opportunity, there is a
Planning Commission public hearing on June 27 and DCD will be accepting written comment through
that date.
Presentation
DCD Staff and Advisory Committee members delivered a comprehensive presentation of the
in the following areas:
Reviewing natural environment related goals/policies and recommending revisions
Considering new goals/policies for urban forestry and recommending City tree canopy goals
Providing guidance on:
Tree clearing, management and protection
o
Street tree management
o
Tree health and canopy on public lands
o
Landscaping requirements for commercial and industrial areas
o
enforceable regulations; planting, restoration and demonstration programs; and allocation of sufficient
resources.

At the conclusion of the presentation, the next steps were outlined as follows:

Discussion
Councilmembers and Commission members discussed the information and asked questions of the
Committee and DCD staff, with a particular focus on how best to balance regulatory requirements with
incentives and education. Staff emphasized that the work done so far is still at the policy level, not the
regulatory level. Establishing goals is a key step before focusing on specifics of implementing
regulations.
