After the boring was completed, the borehole was backfilled with a mixture of soil Z cuttings and bentonite chips, Q m W 0 i O D uring drilling, soil samples were obtained on 5 -foot depth Intervals using the Standard Penetration Test U 0 (SPT) procedure (ASTM: D 1586). This test and sampling method consists of driving a standard 2 -inch too w outside diameter (OD) split - barrel sampler a distance of 18 inches into the soil with a 140 -pound hammer, -I H free- falling a distance of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive the sampler through each of to the three, 6 - Inch intervals is noted. The total number of blows Struck during the final 12 inches of W penetration is considered the Standard Penetration Resistance, or "blow count ". If 50 or more blows are g ~ struck within one 6 -inch interval, the driving is ceased and the blow count is recorded as 50 blows for the j actual number of inches of penetration. The resulting Standard Penetration Resistance values provide a = a measure of the relative density of granular soils or the relative consistency of cohesive soils. l— Z Z F. 1— O The boring log appended to this letter report dceribe the various types of soils encountered in the boring, Z 1 - based primarily on visual interpretations made in the field. The log also indicatess the approximate depth ` ? D i of the contacts between different soil types, although these contact may be gradational or undulating. U Whore a change in soil N _ type occurred between sampling intervals, we inferred the depth of contact. In -'' p . addition, the log indicates the depth of any groundwater observed in the boring; the Standard Penetration 2 W • ■ i Resistance at each sample location, and any Laboratory tests performed on the soil samples. I LL H —O SU BSURFACE CONDITIONS U O Dascd on file elevated SPT bloweounta recorded in the upper sample, attempt (2.5.4 feet), we interpret the Z ~ upper soils encountered at the site as fill soils. Our test boring indicated native soils beneath the site to 0 consist of extensive deposits of very loose to loose sands and sandy silts. The very loose to Loose sands e . and sandy silts extended to depths of about 35 -feet, and were underlain by medium dense to very dense ' medium to coarse sands to the full explored depth, approximately 44.feet below ground surface (bgs) . Sta Penetration resistunee values in the upper native soils ranged frcrn zero to 10 blows per foot and . were generally in the range of 4 to 8 blows per foot, The SPT values in the basal medium dense to very dense soils ranged from 20 to 60 blows per foot, with a trend of increasing density with increased depth noted in the test boring. i Groundwater was oncountcrnd at a depth of about 13 - feet bgs at the time. cinr test boring was completed. Soils below 13 -feet were described as wet, Groundwater conditions may vary with seasonal ch ges in precipitation, with changes in site utilization, or other factors. Such deep events have exhibited no surface faulting. According to the Seismic UO Zone Map of the United States contained in Figure 16 -2 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (URC), the co 0 0 failure or liquefaction. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which soils lose some or all shear strength for short Z periods of time during an earthquake. The effects of liquefaction may be large total and/or differential z O settlement for structures with heavy foundations founded in or affected by the liquefying soils. d j Q Groundihaking of sufficient duration results in the loss of grain-to-grain contact ue to rapid increase in pore water pressure, causing the saii to behave as a fluid for short periods of time. r f p Q O H To have potential for liquefaction, a soil must be cohesionless with a grain size distribution of a specified U tu range (generally sands and silty sands); it must be loose to medium dense; it must be below the groundwater table; and it must be subject to a sufficient magnitude and duration of groundshaking. Baacd en the presence iii z of low density soils and the relatively high groundwater table encountered in our test boring, the site soils U below the water table extending to a depth of about 35 -feet bgs are considered to be potentially liquefiable, t-- Z CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS p, 3 Based on the results of our studies, we recommend the silo foundations consist of driven or drilled piles which fully penetrate the very loose, soft and potentially liquefiable deposits and bear within the medium dense to very dense soils encountered at depth. The following sections of this letter present our design . recommendations related to the construction of the pile foundations for the silos. The most likely pile types for @ project of this magnitude would be driven timber piling or AugercaSt piles. Timber piles usually have tip diameters of 8 and 10- inches. For the loads imposed by this structure, 12 or 14 -inch 1 Augercast piling would appear to be applicable. The timber pile section selected must also be structurally ' capable of resisting the imposed loads, The maximum allowable timber fiber stress generally limits the capacity of driven timber piling to a working capacity of 25-tons on an 8 -inch tip and 35 -tons on the 10- . inch tip pile. We recommend an allowable load of about 25 - ton~ per pile, for an 8 -inch tip diameter . #;. Augercast piling 12•inchcs in diameter arc conventionally assigned a working load resulting , Z in art allowable capacity of 30 tons. It should be recognized the installation of driven timber piles will re 2 induce significant vibrations. The type of foundation support for the existing building is not known. W D ,J U However, vibrations associated with pile driving may induce settlement if the existing building is not pile 0 0 N supported. If pile driving vibrations could affect the existing foundations, the use of Augercust piling is w = strongly recommended. __II_ to O W I we' recommond that the installation of the piling be observed by a representative from our firm to confirm 2 h that the piles have been installed k accordance with the recommendations contained in this letter report. g For driven piles, the capacity can be confirmed in the field during installation using dynamic pile driving to relations. Augercast piling, On the other hand, are constructed below ground after drilling to a prc- H W determined depth or after pile penetration criteria has b een satisfied by pumping a cement grout under Z = F- high pressure as the auger is withdrawn. For planning purposes, an Augercast pile length of 40 to 45 -feet I— 0 Z F- i may be assumed. Augercast piling need to be installed under the full time observation of an experienced W W engineer or geologist familiar with the pile installation procedure. Because of the loose and very soft, j D near - surface soil conditions, grout volumes significantly in excess of the theoretical pile volumes should 0 to be anticipated. As a minimum, we recommend the Augercast pile contractor have a calibrated grout ' 0 H pump with a grout pressure gage on the grout line. = lli • H CLOSURE Z Z W UN The conclusions and recommendations presented in this report are based. in part, on the explorations that 1- we perfortned for this study. if variations in subsurface conditions are discovered during earthwork, we Z _ may need to modify this report. The future performance and integrity of the silo foundations will depend largely on proper initial site preparation, drainage, and construction procedures. Monitoring by expericzwccd gcotechnical personnel should be considered an integral part of the construction process. We 1 are available to provide geotechnical engineering services during the earthwork and foundation construction phases of the project. If variations in the subsurface conditions are observed at that time. we would be able to provide additional geotechnical recommendations, thus minimizing delays as the project . develops. We are also available to review preliminary plans and specifications before construction f begins, and to provide geotechnical inspection and testing services during construction. 1 i A• y 4Y tF 3 ' BOO Maynard Avenue Soul mu ADAPT T01 tl ) dS4 -7045 { '171 Suite 403 Fax c106)4 4A J .. ,rww.ttiul :a * (sF.
