HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-06-04 Finance and Safety Minutes aw S+ o.;' y City of Tukwila Finance Safety Committee (P 1908 FINANCE AND SAFETY COMMITTEE Meeting Minutes June 4,2007- 5: 00 p.m. PRESENT Councilmembers: Jim Haggerton, Chair; Joan Hernandez and Dennis Robertson Staff: Rhonda Berry, Trina Cook, Kevin Fuhrer, David Haynes, Nick Olivas and Mary Miotke Guests: Joe Huley and Chuck Parrish CALL TO ORDER: Committee Chair Haggerton called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m. I. PRESENTATIONS No presentations. H. BUSINESS AGENDA A. Suralus of Citv owned nronerty on South 180 Staff is requesting that two properties currently owned by the City located at 7210 South 180 and 7220 South 180 be declared surplus. These properties are not being utilized by the City and their questionable conditions make it cost prohibitive for the City to make necessary repairs for such use. Staff recommends these properties be put up for public bid at the minimum cost for both parcels whose common value has been appraised at $480,000. Additional information was requested if it could be available for discussion at the Committee of the Whole meeting. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL. FORWARD TO JUNE 11 COW. B. Permit Application for Fireworks Disolav at Starfire Snorts Comnlex Staff is recommending that the Fireworks Permit Application submitted by Mr. Tom Whitacre for the fireworks display at Family 4 th at the Fort be approved. Mr. Whitacre has provided the fireworks display for the City's annual celebration for the past several years without incident. Staff reported that they will be working with the City of Renton's Fire Department since a portion of the commercial property identified for the fireworks fall out area is within Renton city limits. Additionally, staff has identified and addressed potential issues that could occur and have developed plans in response to those. One issue of particular note is the timing of the fireworks show in relation to the train schedule, which has been coordinated with the railroad. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL. FORWARD TO JUNE 11 COW. C. Adontion of the 2006 International Fire Code. Staff detailed the recommended changes to the code, many of which were housekeeping. Councilmember Robertson requested additional information concerning the difference in safety of sprinklered homes compared to non sprinklered. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL. FORWARD TO JUNE 11 COW. D. Undate of Fire Service Consolidation Studv Chief Olivas explained that the City of SeaTac is interested in a study to determine the feasibility of our Fire Departments consolidating. The SeaTac Council will discuss this matter at its June 12 City Council meeting and probably give staff the green light to move forward. If that Finance & Safetv Committee Minutes June 4. 2007 - Paqe 2 happens, Tukwila will be asked to share the costs associated with such a study. At this time a firm cost has not been determined but it is estimated that each city's share will be something in the neighborhood of $25,000. Details regarding lead agency, steering committee members, and the like will be determined once a decision to move forward is made by both cities. INFORMATION ONLY. E. Report on Car Prowls/Theft/V andalism in the Area Commonly Referred to as Southcenter South Trina reported on car crimes in the T3 Patrol District, of which Southcenter South is a portion. She and Chief Haynes explained that car crimes are typically crimes of opportunity and happen very quickly. Trends being observed in Tukwila mirror those of other cities. Committee members requested that the Council be provided with the charts used in the presentation and staff agreed to do so. INFORMATION ONLY. F. Police Department Annual Report Staff reviewed highlights of the report, particularly the statistics page. Trina provided a brief explanation of the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system and how case data is tracked. INFORMATION ONLY. ID. ANNOUNCEMENTS No announcements. IV.
