Pier block isolated footings must provide for a positive connection to the 4x4 posts. Footings must be placed upon firm soil at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground surface. UBC 2324, & TABLE 18 -I -D. 2. Wood located nearer than 6 inches to earth shall be treated wood or wood of natural resistance to decay. Based upon the proposed foundation design and the requirements of item #1, at minimum, the 4x4 posts must be of treated wood. UBC 2317.8 3. The deck shall be positively anchored to the primary structure at not over 8 feet on center. Such attachment shall not be accomplished by use of toenails•or nails subject to withdrawal. UBC 2326.13 4. Deck guardrail shall be not less than 36 inches in height. Openings through railing shall be such that a 4" diameter sphere cannot pass through. UBC 509.2 & 509.3 5. Stairs: The rise of steps shall not be less than 4 inches or greater than 7 -1/2 inches. The run shall not be less than 10 inches as measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the furthermost projections of adjacent treads. The largest tread run within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch. The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch. UBC 1006.3 (private stair exception does not apply). 6. Stairs: Width of stairs shall not be less than 36 inches. 7. Stair landing: Stair landing shall have a dimension measured in the direction of travel not less than the width of the stairs (36 inches). 8. Stair handrails: The top of handrails . . . shall be placed not less than 34 inches or more than 38 inches above the nosing of treads and landings.
