PERMIT CENTER Seattle • 367 -5813 When the space below is for living and the space above is for walking, Gacodeck is the answer. Gaco Western's Gacodeck is ideal for protecting deck surfaces positioned over usable or occupied space. In fact, any surface that serves as both a floor and a roof is a candidate for the protection of Gacodeck. Gacodeck fluid - applied deck surfaces are applied directly to exterior plywood or concrete decks. They provide outstanding protection for commercial or residential structures including balconies, patios, plazas, roof decks, landings, stadiums, and elevated sidewalks and pool surrounds. Gacodeck surfaces are made to withstand wear under many strict and demanding conditions. They are often used in mechanical room applications where they become virtual traffic decks— "traffic decks that u people walk on ". Gacodeck systems are formulated to perform nder such stress year after year «bile retaining their beauty and effectiveness. Gacodeck: True waterproof protection Gacodeck systems are secunless, two- component, urethane membranes that incorporate organic granules for added slip and wear resistance. The sytithetic rubberlike finish of'Gacodeck systems won't shrink, crack, chip, peal, lift, ur buckle from normal expansion and contraction caused by temperature shifts or the freeze/thaw cycle. When properly applied, Gacodcrk systems will prevent leaks in your structure. Adheres completely for seamless waterproofing. Because they bond so thoroughly, Gacodeck coatings can be applied over structural or topping concrete, plywood, metal, previously coated surfaces, and epoxy stone. The finished installation is completely seamless with no gaps, overlaps, or ridges to separate and threaten time integrity of your (lacodeck protection. Easy to care for. Because Gacodeck coatings are fade resistant and hold tip well against attack by air and waterborne pollutants, a simple cleaning with ordinary soap and water is usually all that's needed to restore the surface to a like new finish. Gacodeck coatings n lake it so easy— they're even formulated to be dirt resistant! A strong performer in overall safety. Gacodeck systems meet various fire resistance ratings, depending I on the specific fir mulation and application. They also provide an —, added measure of safety with their slip resistant granules. These'?' organic granules are imbedded into the coating as an integral ,.s. part oldie system and can't be dislodged under normal use. Available in a variety of textures and colors, Gacodeck systems oiler great flexibility in design and aesthetics. Viable in every climate. Gacodeck coatings are manufactured and formulated for every climate. They are made to withstand the abuse of weather patterns and temperature shifts. The protective membrane remains elastic under a wide range of weather conditions. Pahlka Waterproofing's Gacodeck is an attractive and effective waterproofing system for surfaces that are both floors and roofs. 1 UA- a t • :, HLKA WATERPROOFING f , lastomeric Deck & Root Coatings 825 NE Northgate Way WA 9812 hind Sc206) Seattle. 6 5 813 v 6 p0 1. INSTALLATION PLYWOOD SUPPLY UNDERLAYMENT ENMORE, WA (206) 489 -6588 EXTERIOR AC PLYWOOD UNDERLAYMENT PLUGGED CRO68BANDO UNDER FACE and other AMERICAN PLYWO ASSOC IATION s SPECIFICATION GUIDE SELECTION AND INSTALLATION OF PLYWOOD FOR APPLICATION OF GACOFLEX ELASTOMERIC COATINGS The following are minimum recommendations. In some instances, greater requirements may be specified for individual applications. The appli- cation of elastomeric coatings to plywood is re- commended only when these requirements are met. Plywood shall conform to U.S. Product Standard PS 1 -83 and shall carry the grade trademark of the American Plywood Association. Grades EXT APA / or EXT APA AC are acceptable. These are minimum grades suitable for liquid coating applications. Other grades, including Exterior APA C -D with Exterior Glue and APA C -C Exterior, are unsuit- Ole as a substrate for liquid - applied coating mem- ranes. The reasons for unsuitability include lack of dimensional stability, a higher frequency of poor or moderate glue lines which allow buck- ling or lifting of the top ply, and excessive splint- ered, leafed and raised surface grain which cannot be stabilized by liquid coatings. All panel edges shall be supported on 2" lumber blocking or primary framing. Tongue and groove edging in panels less than 1 -1/8" thick does not _replace blocking. 3 2, Place plywood panels in moderate contact without forcing, taking care not to damage the edges. Ply- wood shall be continuous across two or more spans with face grain across supports and long dimension perpendicular to supports. Joints shall be level and smooth. G ACO WESTERN P.O. SLOPE (Disregard on Wall Systems) The deck shall be sloped a minimum of 1/4" to the foot and constructed as to drain freely, preferably to a drain or a gutter. Gacoflex coatings cannot be used to provide such a slope which is a function of the structural design. The lack of a slope leads to possible leaks at low thresholds, puddles and surface staining for which the coating applicator does not assume responsibility. Drainage to the edge may soil the fascia. Installing a positive drip so that drainage is outside the fascia or installing a blocked -out fascia allowing drainage behind is recommended. The inside "hidden fascia" should then be protected with the entire coating system including base coat, taped joints and topcoat. Granule texture can be deleted if desired. 4. VENTILATION Gacoflex coatings provide an effective vapor retarder. , Good design requires that adequate ventilation be provided for all space enclosed. One inch minimum head space is required hP- iween insulation and the underside of the plywood panel. Insulation shall have vapor barrier to the GACOFLEX WESTERN, LTD. 8063 128th St. / Surrey, B.C. More complete sound deadening can be secured by installing 1/2" insulation board on the primary framing' under the plywood panels. Plywood and insul- ation board joints shall not coincide. NAILING tot 604 , Use non- rusting screws with countersunk heads, hot- dipped galvanized nails, or deformed shank nails only. Nails shall be 6d for 3/4" plywood or less and. 8d for 7/8" or more. Space fasteners 6 " OC along panel edges and 12" OC along inter - mediate supports, except 6" OC along all supports when span. is 48 ". Space 12" OC in all directions when installing 1/2" on solid substrates. Drive nails flush without indenting the plywood. Auto- matic nailers which indent the surface shall not be used 6.. PROTECTION The plywood shall be protected by the general . contractor prior to application of the coating. It shall be turned over to the coating applicator clean dry and free from paint, plaster, asphalt, oil, dirt or other surface contaminants. In wet weather, consideration can be given to precoating the panels with one full base coat prior to in- stallation to assure dry panels. Failure to ade- quately protect the plywood from Water. will promote surface checking and raise face grain, obtaining the same results as inferior grades of plywood. ee: action ywoo ra es n addition, damp plywood and other surface con- taminants can interfere . with adhesion and cause staining of Gacoflex coatings. Look for these markings or insist on written certification from plywood suppliers that the ply- wood meets the PS 1 -83 standard for EXT APA AC or. EXT APA BC. The long term performance of an elastomeric fluid - applied ' roofing system is dependent on the integrity of the plywood substrate. Gaco Western incorporates minimum standard; for plywood by reference in published specifications. The use of less than a minimum standard plywood can lead to roof problems. Any such problems are considered to be the result of non - compliance with published specifications and are asa the responsibility of Gaco Western. Date for the above recommendations was compiled with information supplied by American . Plywood Association, P.O. Box 11700, Tacoma, WA 98411, (206) 565-6600. 2. GETTING READY 3. FLASEHING 4. SURFACE CONDITIONS IAILII 111111I00PIIC IIC Seattle, NA 98125 (206) 367-5813 URETHANE GACUIIr7CK APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS See Specification GW -3 for detailed instruction on construction and preparation of plywood decks. Take care to follow this specification closely. The deck must be dry and clean there must be no dust, wax or other material on it. These can interfere with proper adhesion or can discolor through the entire system to the Gacodeck surface. Installation of the Urethane Gacodeck system over concrete or other than new plywood surfaces should be done by professional applicators as it requires specialized training for proper sealing and priming of the surface. First of all, read all the instructions and be sure you understand them. Once the urethane is mixed together you cannot stop it from setting up and it is too costly to throw away. Make sure you have the following items: a. rollers and covers (must have solvent resistant core) You will need at least one roller per coat (they cannot be saved once used) b. a good quality nylon type bristle brush, preferably 3 inch c. knife or scissors for cutting tape; d. rags for wiping up and cleaning e. power mixer, or drill with mixing wand f. masking tape When the coating system is to terminate at a place where there is no natural break, masking tape should be used to get a clean, sharp line. When there is a chance of spillage or dripping an other surfaces, fasten paper or plastic with masking tape to give protection. NOTE: Only the last coat of urethane should be carried onto the masking tape - all other coats should terminate short of the masking tape. Remove the masking tape immediately after the last coat is applied. You can flash at edges using the taping system or by using sheet metal flashing (See Specification G41- 1 -DE) Sheet metal flashing should be free from oil or grease and primed with Gacoflex E5320 Epoxy Primer (see Product Data Sheet for this primer for further instructions) . Sheet metal should be secured to the deck surface using galvanized ring shank nails spaced 1 -2 inches on center. Caulk all plywood joints, cracks, and sheet metal edges with Sikaflex 221 polyurethane caulk. Smooth caulk by feathering edges with a 5" broad knife._ Gacoflex urethanes contain color pigment in the Part A. Mix Part A to suspend all pigment and then mix equal volumes of Part A and Part B. Stir thoroughly. All quantities must be power mixed for 5 minutes or longer. MIXING IS CRITICAL. Best results are obtained by pouring Part A into Part B while mixing. Polyethylene or polypropylene mixing containers can be re -used since set up material is easily stripped out cleanly the following day. See Specification CW -1 Section 1V -B, Urethane Coating Application for other i nstructions, URETHANE GACODEQC INSTRUCTIONS 6. TAPING gal Apply Gacoflex 66B tape to all joints, cracks, sheet metal edges, and changes in plane. Mix an amount of urethane equal to approximately 1/3 gallon per 100 sq ft of deck surface per paragraph #5 above. Apply a 9 inch wide roll coat of urethane centered over each joint, etc. Let this moderately heavy coat set up approximately 1/2 hour until it starts to became tacky. Imbed the tape into this coat, stretching it slightly to insure no wrinkles or voids under the tape. Apply a second coat over the first tape at the intersection before applying the second tape. Allow the second coat to cure approximately 1 hour before proceeding to paragraph #7. 7. FIRST COAT Apply over -all base coat of urethane (see paragraph #5 for mixing) at rate of approx 1 -1/4 to 1 -1/2 gallon per 100 sq ft of deck surface including the previously taped areas. Allow this first coat to cure at least 48 hours before starting the 2nd coat. 8. SECOND COAT gal Inspect the surface for any damage prior to application of this coat. Any surface damage or skips in the material must be repaired by ref lashing, retaping and replacing of the base coat so that a continuous menbrane in substantially uniform thickness covers the entire surface prior to application of this second coat. Apply over -all second coat of urethane at the coverage rate of 3/4 - 7/8 gal per 100 sq ft. Sprinkle an uniform layer of granules into this second coat. (Coat and sprinkle small area at a time; for example, coat 25 sq ft with second coat urethane and sprinkle 1 pound of granule.) Take care not to overlap urethane onto previously sprinkled areas. Let this second coat of urethane with sprinkled granule cure overnight at least. Take care to schedule this second coat so that the granules do not get rained on. If they do get wet, let dry at least one warm day before proceeding to #9. 9. TOP COAT gal Be sure there is no moisture in the granules before proceeding. Remove any excess granules by sweeping, blowing, or vacuuming prior to application of this top coat. Apply remaining urethane over second coat with granules at rate of approx 1 -1/4 to 1 -1/2 gal per 100 sq ft. Take care to roll this on evenly for best appearance. After this top coat is installed, allow three or more days curing before use, depending on drying conditions. taping mix gal 1st coat gal 2nd coat gal top coat gal gal total page GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Gaco Western UB -64, UA-65, U-66 and UA-66 Series urethanes are two component, 1:1 ratio liquid applied elastomers. When properly com- bined and applied they cure to form tough, high - strength rubber membranes. 1. MIXING 2. APPLICATION OF BASE COAT SECTION IV-B URETHANE COATING APPLICATION 1.1 Observe cautions on the label about frozen components. Examine both Part A and Part B for graininess. If graininess is observed warm the entire contents of the can to 60' F. or higher, and mix until smooth. Partial containers of Part B cannot be stored longer than one or two days as exposure to atmospheric moisture induces cure. When repackaged into smaller containers with minimal exposure to air, leftover Part B may be usable for up to several weeks. Keep Part B containers covered whenever possible. 1.2 All Gacoflex urethanes contain color pig- ment in the Part A. Mix Part A to suspend pigment prior to mixing equal volumes of Part A and Part 8. UB-64 Series Part B contains a small amount of pigment which also requires mixing prior to use. Stir thoroughly for five minutes, scraping sides of container. Quantities larger than two gallons must be power mixed. Best results are obtained by pouring Part A into Part B while mixing. Polyethylene or poly- propylene mixing containers are recommended as they can be re-used. Set up material is easily stripped out cleanly the following day. UB -6411 has a five to fifteen minute pot life and should be used only with multi- component metering and mixing equipment. 2.1 After priming and installing tape, including coating where required, apply overall base coat- ing of Gaco Western urethane in specified cover- age. All specified quantities are on an undiluted basis. Better films are usually produced with less entrapped air when the rate of application is no more than 1'6 gallons per square. The specified gallonage and uniformity of coating are the critical elements of a quality application. 2.2 Gacoflex urethanes cure rapidly and the cleaning of roller covers and brushes is usually impractical. Workmen should have extra roller covers and brushes on hand. 2.3 Apply Gacoflex urethane in a uniform thickness without skips or holidays. Base coats can be rolled or sprayed, depending on job type and size. See separate instructions for spray equipment recommendations Allow each coat to dry until tack free and sufficiently cured for foot traffic before applying additional urethane coating. From less than one hour, to overnight, may be required depending on drying conditions and the particular product used. 2.4 Gaco Western specifications recommend alternating colors, where possible, between multiple coats to maintain quality control on the job. 2.5 Extend each coat over cants and up vertical surfaces of pads, curbs, walls and parapets. The top of curbs and equipment pads shall be similarly coated. In the case of walls and par- apets, extend coating to the point where coun- terflashings enter the masonry. Where no coun- terflashing is specified, hold the base coats just short of the termination line at edge of deck to avoid seeping under masking tape or spilling on adjacent unprotected surfaces. 2.6 If the entire job cannot be carried through to completion without interruption, the inter- ruption should occur after the first coat. This will provide protection for the tape system and the general roofing area. Coated surfaces must be clean and dry before work resumes. The preferred method of clean- GACOFLEX WESTERN, LTD. An alternative . method is to lightly solvent wipe, using extreme care to avoid lifting or wrinkling. 3. COLD WEATHER APPLICATION During cold weather, special precautions must be taken in applying two-component urethanes. These coatings should not be applied to surfaces 40' F. or colder. Store materials above 65• F., or warm to above 65• F. prior to use. One half ounce per gallon of combined Part A and Part B will increase cure rate as follows: UB -6411 by 25%, U-66 by 75%, UA-66 by 75%, UA-65 by 200%, and UB -6407 by 500%. An accelerator, U -5651, is available to increase . cure rate. HOT WEATHER APPLICATION Product data on pot life and cure rate are provided for materials at 70' F. At temperatures above 70° F., pot life and cure time will decrease propor- tionately as temperature increases. Store materials out of direct sun and mix only the amount that can be applied within the pot life. Refer to the Product Data Sheet for the particular Gacoflex urethane coating for details. 5. APPLICATION OF TOP COATS 5.1 Apply urethane topcoat or trowel coat the next day, after the base coat, if possible. (Note: See paragraph 2.6 in reference to inter- ruptions.) UA -65 Series • coatings are not . suitable for . trowel application. U8.64. Series are not in- tended for use as top coats. 5.2 Inspect for damage prior to the application of top coat. Any surface damage must be re- paired by re- flashing, re- taping and replacing of base coat so that a continuous membrane in substantially uniform thickness covers the entire surface prior to top coat application. 5.3 While careful color matching procedures are used, different batches of urethane may vary slightly in hue. This variation will be too slight to be perceptible if changes are made at natural breaks in the . surface. Inter- mixing of batches may be necessary or desirable to assure consistency in top coat color. CAUTION: Excessively heavy applications of urethane (greater than 40 mils wet) can cause pigment separation during drying, resulting in a blotched color. Uniform application at the specific coverage is important to provide proper results. . 5.4 Remove masking tape at edges of coating area as soon as the final coat of urethane is applied. By removing the tape while the coating is wet, it will not be necessary to cut it off to avoid damage to the edge of the coating. Any seepage under the tape on rough surfaces can be wiped off with thinner while wet. legal decription plan N!
