It is my opinion that laterally bracing this type of ceiling is not necessary and that it does not fall under the requirements of U.B.C. Standard 25-2 Section 25.210. It appears that the intent of the Uniform Building Code is to restrain the lateral movement of suspended ceiling systems during an earthquake to prevent the acoustical tiles from falling on the occupants of the room and causing a "panic". In the case of an open grid ceiling, there are no objects that will fall during an earthquake. Please note that if light fixtures, mechanical equipment or other similar objects were to be installed, they would need to be individually supported by the structure above the ceiling.
