Maintain fire extinguisher coverage throughout. Clear access to fire extinguishers is required at all times. They may not be hidden or obstructed. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.5) 2. No point in a sprinklered building may be more than 200 feet from an exit, measured along the path of travel. (UFC 9.110) Storage above 12 feet may necessitate increasing the sprinkler density to extra hazard and adding smoke removal capabilities. (UFC 8101) (NFPA 231) Storage may not be closer than 36 inches in all directions to ceiling -hung "Space or Unit" heaters. (UFC 1109.2) Storage may not be closer than 18 inches below sprinkler heads. (NFPA 13, 4 -2.5 and NFPA 231.5 -1) The storage of idle (un -used) pallets is limited to six feet in height by the Uniform Fire Code. If storage quantity in excess of six feet in height is required, outdoor storage must be utilized. (NFPA 231C 4 -3.1) High -piled combustible storage is combustible materials in closely packed piles more than 12 feet in height or combustible materials on pallets or in racks more than 12 feet in height. For certain special- hazard commodities such as rubber tires, plastics, some flammable liquids, idle pallets, etc., the critical pile height may be as low as 6 feet.
