ORDINANCE NO. 730 RE EM E B \L
AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
FOR FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS WITHIN
THE CITY OF TUKWILA USED FOR ASSEMBLY, EDUCA-
TIONAL, INDUSTRIAL, INSTITUTIONAL, MERCANTILE,
STORAGE,.. AND MULTI FAMILY DWELLING
PURPOSES
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DO
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Buildings within the City of Tukwila used for assembly,
educational, industrial, institutional, mercantile, storage,
and multi family dwelling purposes shall be equipped
with fire protection systems which meet the following minimum
requirements:
A. Sprinkler Systems Required:
A fully automatic sprinkler system designed, installed
and tested per NFPA #13 (Current Edition) shall be installed in
all new buildings in excess of 20,000 square feet total floor area.
B. A fully automatic sprinkler system per (A) above may
be required by the Chief of the Fire Department and the Officer
in charge of the Fire Prevention Bureau for new buildings under
20,000 square feet total floor area when, in their judgment, any
of the following conditions exist:
Hazardous operations, hazardous contents, critical
exposure problems, limited accessibility to the building, or
other items which may contribute to definite fire hazards.
C. Hose Stations Required:
Hose stations (standpipes) shall be required in all new
buildings.

1. Hose shall be U.L. approved 1 1/2" diameter
rubber lined fire hose, 75 feet in length with an
adjustable (fog -type) plastic shut -off type nozzle.
(Nozzle type shall be approved in writing by the
Tukwila Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau.)
2. Design, installation and testing of hose stations
shall comply with NFPA #14 (Current Edition) with
any exceptions stated herein.
3. Hose stations shall be "wet." That is, water
pressure shall be present at the individual station
valves at all times.
4. All hose fittings shall be National Standard
Thread, Higbee -Cut.
D. Where this Ordinance conflicts with the Uniform
Building Code requirements (Adopted by Ordinance No. 678), the
more stringent (greatest protection) shall apply.
E. Any exceptions to items covered by this Ordinance
shall be made by the Chief of the Fire Department and the Officer
in charge of the Fire Prevention Bureau. Such exceptions must be
in writing.
F. Existing Buildings:
1. Existing fully sprinklered buildings when
remodeled or added- on -to, shall retain the
feature of being sprinklered in the remodeled
or added -on portion.
2. If by adding -on to an existing building, the
resulting total structure falls within the cover-
age of (A) or (B) of this Ordinance, the entire
structure shall be fully sprinklered.
