HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrd 0729 - Specifications and Standards for Fire Hydrants s ^1„ 1908 CITY OF T WASHINGTON ORDINANCE NO. 729 9 AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS FOR FIRE HYDRANTS INSTALLED WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: All fire hydrants installed within the corporate limits of the City of Tukwila shall meet or exceed the following speci- fications and standards: Section 1. TYPE. Hydrants shall conform to American Water Works Association Specifications C 502 -54; shall be compression -type and shall have a two -piece breaking flange with breaking thimble at the ground line of stem; shall have a self oiling dry bonnet with factory filled reservoir holding approximately 8 ounces of oil. Oil reser- voir shall have not less than 2 "0," ring seals. Oil reservoir shall be so designed as to give a complete lubrication of stems each time the hydrant is operated. The upper stem shall have a brass sleeve. Hydrants shall be equipped with two 2 1/2" N.S.T. hose ports and one 4 1/2" N.S.T. pumper discharge port; and shall have a 1 1/4" pentagon open -lift operating nut. Hydrants shall have a 6" M.J. bottom connection and 5 1/4" main valve opening; shall be designed for a 42" bury and shall have 18" above grade level to the center of the pumper discharge port. Hydrant color to be "Rustoleum" #659 Yellow Gloss. l 1 -1- c Hydrants are to equal Mueller #A -24015 or Mueller "A -419. Section 2. INSTALLATION. Hydrants shall not be clos r than 4 feet to any object; i.e., fences, parking, buildings, etc., (with the exception of hydrant guard posts.) Guard posts shall be installed around hydrants not pro- tected by curbs, so as to prevent an automobile from contacting the hydrant. The guard posts shall be either steel (minimum 4" diameter) or concrete (minimum 8" diameter.) Posts shall be 3 feet from the center of the hydrant and shall not be in direct line with any discharge ports. Posts shall be 6 feet long; 3 3 1/2 feet shall be buried. Painted finish shall be the same as for hydrants. All hydrants shall be installed with an auxiliary gate valve between the hydrant main valve and the water main. The gate valve shall be U.L. approved and have a 2" square operating nut. The valve shall be installed at the hydrant lateral Tee. If the hydrant is greater than 10 feet from the main, the gate valve shall be installed in the lateral line, 10 feet from the hydrant. The protector cover for the valve shall be left in plain view, flush with grade after landscaping or paving. Hydrants, auxiliary gate valves and supply lines shall be installed to meet sound engineering standards per NFPA #24, paragraphs 4202, 4301, 4302, 4303, 4304, 4305. Section 3. COVERAGE. Hydrants shall be placed so that no point of a building (around its perimeter) is greater than 300 feet from a hydrant. When geographical or construction features prevent the placing of water mains and /or hydrants, the Fire Prevention Bureau -2- R A may authorize the use of approved "wall hydrants" or similar devices. Such authorization must be in writing. Section 4. ACCESSIBILITY. Hydrants shall be in plain view for a distance of 50 feet in the line of vehicular approach. (Free from shrubs, trees, fences, landscaping, etc.) The 4 1/2" pumper discharge port shall face the street, or in the case of private hydrants, shall face toward the prop- erty being protected. Section 5, SUPPLY. Hydrant supply lines shall be of such size and design as to provide the required fire -flow as recommended by the Washington Survey and Rating Bureau Standards. Tapping into City water mains shall be by the process known as "wet- tapping," so as to allow uninterrupted service on those mains. Section 6. EXCEPTIONS. Any exceptions to items covered by this Ordinance shall be made by the Chief of the Fire Department and the Officer in charge of the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Tukwila Fire Department. Such exceptions must be in writing.
