The following sheets provide information on the existing and proposed configuration of the precast concrete panel at the South side of the 20 -04 Building. Sheet 2: reinforcing in the existing panels. Sheet 3: the reinforcing around the existing opening. The (6)#6 at the left of the opening requires cutting inorder to remove the 48" wide portion of concrete panel. Sheet 4: the dimensions and weight of the existing concrete panel and the location of the 28 kip load from the glu -lam which frames in at the top, near its center. Sheet 5: notes from the original drawings which give a design Toad of 1,000#/SF for the floor slab. Sheet 6: calculations for a load path with the strength to carry the shear from roof dead and live load and the • weight of the concrete above the opening - MC8X8.5 and (12) 5/8" diameter x 4" embedment Hilti Kwik Bolt 2. THE VERTICAL LIFT DOOR The weight of the door, door frame and counter weight bear on the slab at the sides of the opening. The 1,000# /SF design Toad for the slab will carry this load. The door manufacturer will bolt the door frame to the wall using an MC8X8.5 each side of the opening to shim the door frame flush with the MC8.8.5 header. The Austin Company will modify the drawing to indicate an Fy >= 36 ksi for the MC8X8.5. We have attached copies of relevant pages from the Hilt catalog for reference concerning the "Kwik Bolt II" properties. 2. The Hilti "Kwik Bolts" are being used in shear only. Special inspection is not required in this application (see attached ICBO report). 3. Calculation sheet 4 shows the traditional triangular Toad distribution for a point load on a concrete wall which the engineer used to estimate the load on the channel over the opening. Calculation sheet 6 shows the summation of dead and snow load from the roof and wall over the opening. We estimate a total ultimate force on the MC8X8.5 header of 21 kips which the web of the channel and the Kwik Bolts II expansion anchors over the opening have the strength to support. As shown in Details 1 and 2, the header channel extends past the edges of the new wall opening and has sufficient Kwik Bolts into the concrete each side of the opening to transfer the calculated vertical loads into the wall. The following comments should be addressed by the permit applicant: 1. Structural Notes need to be provided. Material specifications for the MC channel and Kwik Bolts need to be indicated. Special inspection of the Kwik Bolts may be required. A copy of the manufacturer's load tables should be submitted that show whether the design load requires special inspection or not. 3 Since the (6) #6 reinforcing is being removed from the side of the opening, the Engineer of Record should indicate how the vertical point load from the beam above is being distributed to the foundation. The information submitted does not indicate how much concrete wall is left once the 4 -foot section is removed. It appears that a steel column may need to be added to the side of the opening. If it is intended to use the new door frame, the design and connection of such elements must be submitted for our review and included on the drawings. The above listed review comments should be responded in itemized letter form. We recommend that the permit applicant have the structural Engineer of Record, The Austin Company, respond to the above comments and resubmit two copies of revised drawings and one copy of supplemental structural calculations directly to our office.
