BY JFB [EXPIRES G/19 hi; 1 RECEIVED CITY OF TUKWILA MAR 1 8 1998 PERMIT CENTER MADISON ( LOS ANGELES, PHOENIX, TULSA, ATLANTA FOR ARCO Products Company DESCRIPTION New Image to Existing Canopy JOB NO. SH 2 OF 3 DATE 3/17/98 DES. BY JFB CHKD. BY Design Summary ARCO canopy fascias are being remodeled to incorporate new image. This involves fastening new 3 mm ACM panels (< 1psf - see following sheet) over existing fascia panels. This modification does not affect lateral wind loading and the added weight produces design stress increases of Tess than 3% for the DL and lateral seismic cases (which, in our opinion, is negligible). A variety of canopy sizes /configurations were checked to arrive at this figure of "< 3 % ". For illustration purposes, a 40' x 50', 16' high, (4) column canopy will be examined. Column tributary area is 500 ft and the column tributary linear horizontal roof projection is 25 ft. (For other canopies, as their size increases or decreases, column size and "loads will do so proportionately). First, consider wind load: Since the new fascia panels are the same size as the old ones, horizontal projection does not change and thus design wind moment in columns is unaffected. Brackets & other supports are already designed for local wind load. Next, consider seismic bending: For unmodified canopy above, column design DL = tributary weights of deck, beams, & existing fascia/gutters = ( 1/ 4)( 40')( 50' )(5psf) +15001bs +(25' +20')(5plf) = 4225 lbs. This results is a column seismic bending moment of (0.367)(4225 lbs)(16') = 24.8 ft-k. Now, new fascia panels add weight of about 2plf, or (2plf)(20' +25') = 90 lbs/col. Design seismic bending is thus increased to (4225# + 90 #)(0.367)(16') = 25.4 ft-k, or about a 2.5% stress increase. In our opinion, this seismic design bending stress increase is minor and can be neglected. For canopies with hip /gable roofs, etc., weight of new fascia will be an even smaller percentage of the DL, and thus seismic bending stress will increase by smaller percentages. Some further notes: 1) Column design for canopies with only one row of columns is generally governed by unbalanced live Toad moments and new fascia addition will not affect the column design bending at all. 2) Axial Toad on the columns due to weight of new fascia can be neglected as is contributes only a fraction of a percent in the column unity checks. 3) Attachment screws shown on accompanying drawings have been checked and are adequate to resist wind loads. 4) ACM panels up to 4' tall w/ bracket supports at 4' o.c. are in common use as service station canopy fascias. Rack stored material requires at least three supports running the full width of the panel. We do not recommend vertical stacking. Protective masking should be used whenever ALUCOBONO material is to be fabricated. Proper care will ensure a high quality finished product. • Fabrication ALUCOBONO material can be processed by equipment common to the wood and metal•working Industries. Cut with power saw or shear it; drill with punch or power drill; bend with press break, pyramid or pinch roller. The minimum bending radius is fifteen times the material thickness. Additional information can be obtained in technical brochures available from our Benton, KY office. Attachment Panels can be attached to other elements by use of aluminum extrusions, using two basic methods, rout and return, or continuous edge grip. Other concepts are available- consult our Benton, KY office. Anodized Finishes Anodized panels come in several standard colors. Color range samples must be appro%ed prior to production for large applications. Consult the Aluminum Association manual for care and handling information. . Painted Finishes Coil-coated painted panels come in standard and custom colors and paint formulations. KYNAR'" poiyvinylidene fluoride (PVOF) resin oased. Our comments are as follows: WALL SIGN PERMITS (S98 -013 and S98 -014): Your applications for two freestanding sign permits have been denied because the maximum number of permitted signs has already been exceeded at this location. Per Sheet AS1 -1 of Barghausen's 12/22/94 survey (submitted with your application), there are four existing wall signs on the convenience store. (Your survey also identifies a pole sign near the southeast corner of the property.) The station is located on Southcenter Boulevard and has no other street frontage. Per TMC 19.32.160(2), service stations in commercial zones are only allowed one wall sign for each street frontage. In discussions last week with Dan Goalwin of your office, we have agreed to allow an additional sign per the provisions of TMC 19.12.050(A)(6): • John W Rants, Mayor Department of Community Development Steve Lancaster Director "One on- premises sign not electrical or illuminated, four square feet in area or less, which is affixed permanently on a plane parallel to the wall that is located entirely on private property." (......... : ' ,:"' . The sign will be allowed upon our receipt of the following documentation: 1. A letter from the project architect verifying that the canopy (to which the sign will be affixed) is not illuminated. 2. Three copies of the dimensioned drawings of all exterior walls of the convenience store which documents the sizes of all existing wall signs. Please note' if any of these signs . are four square feet or less., no additional sign will be allowed under TMC 19.12,050(A)(61. 3. RE: Minor Cosmetic Renovation to Canopy at Existing ARCO AM /PM Facility 5800 Southcenter Boulevard, Tukwila, Washington ARCO FAC No. 6155 / Our Job No. 6516 On behalf of the Atlantic Richfield Company, I am writing to request that the City of Tukwila approve the enclosed plans and building permit for the proposed canopy cosmetic renovation at the above - referenced location. As required by the City, I am enclosing the following documents for your approval: 1. One City of Tukwila building permit application. 2. Two canopy remodel plans. 3. Two civil plans. 4. Two sets of calculations and plans. 5. One check payable to the City of Tukwila in the amount of $64.84 to cover plan review fees. The canopy renovation program involves modifying the fascia paneling and altering the treatment of the canopy columns. The major components of the renovation include a new blue /silver /blue banded fascia with one- (1.3 square feet each) red ARCO logo(s) and silver canopy column wraps. The fascia will be prefinished metallic opaque panels mounted similarly to the existing fascia panels. Architecturally, the proposed renovation is a vast improvement to the existing appearance of this facility. The 30 square foot ARCO spandrel will be removed (see canopy plan). The "New Look" image has been specifically developed to: 1) differentiate ARCO's gasoline operation from its convenience store franchise; 2) reflect a polished, clean, simple, and bold presentation of ARCO gasoline, and 3) move ARCO forward with an up -to -date image improvement program. The value of the improvements is $5,000. Please contact me immediately upon plan and permit approval to notify me of any outstanding plan check and all permit fees. Rants, Mayor Department of Community Development Steve Lancaster, Director Ms. Alexia Inigues Assistant Planner Barghausen Consulting Engineers, Inc. 1 8215 72nd Avenue South Kent, Washington 98032 Re: Application for Two Wall Sign Permits (S98 -013 and S98 -014) for Arco Station at 5800 Southcenter Boulevard We have reviewed the above- referenced permit applications which you submitted on March 10, 1998. Our comments are as follows: WALL SIGN PERMITS (S98 -013 and S98 -014): Your applications for two freestanding sign permits have been denied because the maximum number of permitted signs has already been exceeded at this location. Per Sheet AS1 -1 of Barghausen's 12/22/94 survey (submitted with your application), there are four existi g wall signs on the convenience store. (Your survey also identifies a pole sign near the southeast corner of the property.) The station is located on Southcenter Boulevard and has no other street frontage. Per TMC 19.32.160(2), service stations in commercial zones are only allowed one wall sign for each street frontage. In discussions last week with Dan Goalwin of your office, we have agreed to allow an additional sign per the provisions of TMC 19.12.050(A)(6): One on- premises sign not electrical or illuminated, four square feet in area or less, which is affixed permanently on a plane parallel to the wall that is located entirely on private property." The sign will .be allowed upon our receipt of the following documentation: . A letter from the project architect verifying that the canopy (to which the sign will be affixed) is not illuminated. 2. Three copies of the dimensioned drawings of all exterior walls of the convenience store . which documents the sizes of all existing wall signs. Please note: if any of these signs are four square feet or less, no additional sign will be allowed TMC 19.12.050(A)(6). 3. Three copies of the dimensioned drawing of that face of the canopy to which the proposed sign will be affixed (including the size, dimension and content of the proposed sign). 6300 Southcenter Boulevard, Suite 11100 • Tukwila; Washington 98188 • (206) 431•3670 • Fat (206) 43/•3665 Ms. Alexia Inigues Barghausen Engineers, Inc. Re: S98 -013 and S98 -014 March 18, 1998 Page 2 4. Three revised copies of your Site Plan AS1 -1 dated 12/22/94 showing the location of the proposed canopy sign. Mr. Goalwin has agreed to provide this documentation to the City of Tukwila during the week of March 16th. Upon our receipt and approval of this documentation, the canopy sign will be approved. i Please advise the contractor for the canopy renovation that a building permit will be required. The contractor should contact the City of Tukwila Building. Department (206 - 431 -3671) to obtain the necessary applications.
