We understand that these will be constructed near the southwest corner of the building complex. Soil conditions in this area, as defined by the closest boring, consist of medium dense sand to a depth of 10 to 12 feet underlain by about 5 feet of soft silt. 'This stratum is, in turn, underlain by dense granular soils. We understand that it is planned to install 3 -inch diameter heavy -duty pipe piles with a desired design capacity of 5 kips each. To achieve this, we recommend that the piles be driven to a penetration of 5 feet into the underlying dense granular soils or to practical refusal, which ever is reached first. Based on the nearby boring log, this should result in pile lengths of about 20 to 25 feet in length. The contractor should be prepared to adjust pile lengths as necessary since the actual soil profile at the pile locations will likely vary from that at the nearby boring location. Also, changes in grade in the area since the boring was drilled would alter the indicated depths to the changes in soil type. The piles will support the outboard end of three short wing walls that will extend out from the exterior building wall that is also pile - supported. The piles were installed by McDowell Northwest Piledriving using a hydraulically- driven jackhammer mounted on a Bobcat tractor. One pile was located at the outer end of the excavation for each of the grade beams on which the walls will be supported. The inner ends of the grade beams will be tied into the exterior wall foundation. The piles were driven open - ended. The piles were numbered in the order drilled starting with the southernmost pile. Pile No. I was driven to a penetration of 22.5 below the base of the pile cap excavation. Pile No. 2 was driven to a penetration of 23.25 feet and Pile No. 3, to a penetration of 23.5 feet. A nominal refusal criterion for the hammer being used is a penetration of one inch or less for a 20- second period of driving. The final penetration results for the respective piles were: No. 1, 28 seconds per inch average for the final 6 inches of driving; No. 2, 40 seconds per inch average for the final 3 inches of driving; and No. 3, 23 seconds per inch average for the final 6 inches of driving.
