Note that the analysis is only valid for this geometry and loadings per shelf level. Based on this information, the racking will require the foot plate and bolting as specified on sheet 5 at the base of every column. This foot plate detail is capable of resisting overturning forces as required by the 1991 UBC Standards for this racking system. Please call if you have any comments or questions. Sincerely. A. Two arm support is most economical. Distance between arms is 1/2 the length of the load unit. B. Three arm support is 1/3 the length of load unit. TEST (if necessary) Place load on 2 x 4's resting on floor. Use whatever number necessary to arrive at acceptable sag tolerances. NOTE: When figuring the length of a load, include clearance space (one side) between loads! 10" is a good average for long loads. NOTE: Compare arm spacing with straddles and forks on handling equipment for compatability. LATERAL DISTANCE BETWEEN ARMS* (Center to Center) STEP 3 ark. d spacing • For convenience in figuring bracing, the center -to- center distance between arms should be on increments of 6" beginning at 24 ". Anchorage, which is primarily used to provide overturning stabili- ty, is required if single entry units have a height (to top of load) to base width ratio greater than 5 (e.g. H/B 5), or if double entry units have this same ratio greater than 8 (e.g. H/B 8). Generally, an- chorage consists of using concrete anchors to anchor the toe (front) of the base to the floor and thereby prevent the rack from being pushed over backwards when loading the upper arm levels. As an additional stability requirement for both single and double entry units, when this height to width ratio exceeds 7, it is essen- tial that the top of the upright post be tied overhead across the ai- sle to the opposite upright. Double Entry + _ Arm Length x 2 Upright Depth (a) BASE LENGTH SIDE VIEW PUNCHED POST Base Length Base Length Color — All Bases Signal Orange UPRIGHT AND BASE DIMENSIONS After upright height and base length are determined, rack stabili- ty should be checked. STEP 8 exact arm spacing After the upright type is determined (Step 6) the exact arm locations can be worked out. 1. To the subtotal in No. 3 (Step 5) inches Add distance selected upright sets into base Dimension (c) minus (h) = inches Minimum upright height required inches If this total is more than upright height, vertical openings must be reduced or upright height increased. If upright height is increased, Steps 5 and 6 must be computed again with new height. 2.
