Information to Build On This report presents the results of the geotechnical investigation completed by Professional Service Industries (PSI) for the proposed Gibraltar Mausoleum to be constructed in the Riverton Crest Cemetery located at 3400 South 140t Street in Seattle, Washington. The general location of the site is shown on the Vicinity Map, Figure 1. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the subsurface conditions at the site, and based on the conditions encountered, to develop geotechnical recommendations for design and construction of the proposed structure. It is our understanding that the proposed development will consist of constructing a reinforced concrete mausoleum and its associated sidewalks. The mausoleum will cover a footprint area of about 380 square feet and associated sidewalks 570 square feet. These structures will likely be constructed at or near the existing grade. The mausoleum is proposed to be constructed within an L- shaped undeveloped area located at the northwestern corner of the Riverton Crest Cemetery in Seattle, Washington. This undeveloped area is bounded to the west by a school, to the north by a densely - populated residential area, and in other directions by a driveway and some cemetery facilities. On -site surface vegetation is generally covered with blackberry bushes and shrubs. In general, the topography of the site is relatively level. Our field exploration was performed on March 5, 1999. Subsurface conditions at the site were explored by drilling 1 boring to a depth of 21.5 feet. The boring was completed using a truck - mounted drilling equipment provided by Environmental Drilling, Inc. Continuous - flight, hollow - stem augers were used to advance and support the borehole during sampling. Approximate boring location was determined by taping from the existing facilities. The approximate boring location is shown on the Site and Exploration Plan, Figure 2. In the boring, Standard Penetration -Tests (SPT) were performed at selected intervals in general accordance with ASTM Test Designation D -1586. The split spoon sampler was driven with a 140 - pound hammer freely falling 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive the last 12 inches of penetration is called the "N- value ". This value is used to characterize the relative density of sandy soils or consistency of clayey soils. The field exploration was supervised by our staff geotechnical engineer who recorded the soil and groundwater conditions encountered, maintained a log of the boring, obtained representative samples, and observed pertinent site features. The boring log is presented in the Appendix. The final log represents our interpretations of the field log and the test results of field samples. Information to Build On approximate boundaries between soil types. The actual transitions of varying soil strata may be more gradual in the field. 4.1 Soils 4.2 Groundwater 4.0 SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Boring B1 initially encountered about 10 feet of brown silty sand with varying quantity and size of gravel inclusions. This layer of soil appears to become denser with increase of gravel content. Below these silty soils, gray medium sand with little silt and some gravel was next encountered to the boring bottom. This underlying soil unit generally appeared to be glacial outwash materials in a dense to very dense condition. The groundwater level was encountered at a depth of about 5 feet during drilling. However, the groundwater level and flow rate are subject to fluctuations, depending on the season, amount of rainfall, surface water runoff, and other factors. In general, the groundwater level is higher and the flow rate is greater in the period of wetter winter months. 5.1 General 5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the results of our subsurface investigation at the site, the site appears to be suitable for the proposed development from a geotechnical standpoint. A trench footing foundation constructed on undisturbed dense native soils or on structural fill which has been properly placed and compacted over these dense native soils, should be adequate to support the proposed structures. The following sections of this report provide detailed recommendations regarding the foundation system and other geotechnical considerations. These recommendations should be incorporated into the project design drawings and specifications. 5.2 Site Preparation and General Earthwork The proposed structure and sidewalk areas should be stripped and cleared of any topsoil or vegetation. Our boring indicates that the required depth of stripping will be on the order of 6 inches below the existing grade. Stripped organic topsoil should be removed from the site and disposed, or used in landscaping areas, as desired. The stripped materials should not be mixed with any materials to be used as structural fill. After the stripping operation, excavations required to reach the bearing subgrade can be initiated. Prior to placing fill, we recommend a representative from PSI be retained to observe and evaluate l : 1 GIBRALTAR MAUSOLEUM PSI Project No. 861 -95019 March 9, 1999 Page 3 5.4 Foundations the suitability of the bearing subgrade exposed during excavation. Floor slabs and sidewalk areas should be supported on the bearing subgrade or structural fill. If any abandoned utilities are detected or observed on -site, these utilities should be plugged or removed so that they do not provide a conduit for water and cause soil saturation and stability problems. 5.3 Structural Fill and Compaction PROFESSI SAL SERVICE INDUSTRIES, INC. Information to Build On Structural fill is defined as the compacted fill placed under load- bearing areas. Structural fill placed under footings and floor slabs should be placed in horizontal lifts not exceeding 8 inches in loose thickness and compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of its laboratory maximum dry density, determined in accordance with ASTM D -1557 (Modified Proctor) method. The fill materials should be placed at or near the optimum moisture content. With the same compaction procedure as described above, fill under pavements and walkways should be placed in horizontal lifts and compacted to 90 percent of maximum dry density, except for the top 12 inches compacted to 95 percent of maximum dry density. During dry weather, most on -site soils except topsoil can be used as structural fill. In general, soils with more than 5 percent fines can become unstable if exposed to excessive moisture. Compaction will be difficult to achieve the required density if the moisture content increases significantly above wet of optimum. If the on -site soils are exposed to excessive moisture and cannot be adequately compacted, then it may be necessary to import free - draining granular fill. Fill placed during wet weather conditions should consist of granular organic -free materials. The grading requirements for the imported fill are specified in the following table. In our opinion, the proposed mausoleum can be supported on a trench footing foundation bearing on dense undisturbed native soils or on structural fill which is properly compacted and placed over these dense native soils. With the foundation support established as described, an. allowable bearing capacity of 3,000 pounds per square foot (psf) for dense undisturbed soils and 2,500 psf for structural fill, can be used for design. With the above allowable bearing stress applied, we anticipate total settlement should be on the order of 3 /4 inch and differential settlement 1 /2 inch within 40 feet. The majority of the settlements will likely occur during construction. Lateral foundation loads can be resisted by friction between the foundation base and the supporting soil, and by passive earth pressure acting on the face of the embedded portion of the foundation. For the latter, the foundation must be poured "neat" against the undisturbed native soils or backfilled with structural fill. For frictional resistance, a coefficient of 0.3 can be used. For passive earth pressure, the available resistance can be computed using an equivalent fluid weight of 250 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). These lateral resistance values include a factor of safety of 1.5. All footing excavations should be examined by a representative from PSI, prior to placing forms or rebar, to verify that subgrade conditions are as anticipated in this report. 5.5 Slab -on -Grade Floors 5.6 Seismic Design Considerations PROFESS'', . :AL SERVICE INDUSTRIES, INC. Information to Build On Slab -on -grade floors may be supported on the subgrade soils prepared as addressed in the previous sections of this report. After subgrade preparation is completed, the slab should be provided with a capillary break consisting of a minimum of 6 inches of clean, free - draining sand or pea gravel. The requirements specified on Table 1 could be substituted for use as capillary break materials except that there should be no more than 2 percent of fines passing No. 200 sieve. We would also recommend the utilization of a vapor barrier such as a 6 -mil plastic membrane to prevent moisture accumulation on the concrete surface. The project site is classified as a Seismic Zone 3 by the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). Based on our analysis of on -site explorations, we interpret the subsurface site conditions to correspond to a seismic soil profile So, as defined by Table 16-i of the 1997 UBC. Soil profile type So refers to stiff soils. In general, structures are subject to damage from earthquakes due to either direct shaking or foundation soil failure. Localized liquefaction may occur in areas where groundwater seepage was observed with loose near - surface granular fill. Schasse, and David K. Norman in 1994, was reviewed for the evaluation of liquefaction potential at the site. Based on the research of this reference, the site falls within the Category III soil zone of which the liquefaction susceptibility is low.
