Exit hardware and marking shall meet the requirements of the Uniform Fire Code. (UFC 1207 -1212) Exit doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. Exit doors shall not be locked, chained, bolted, barred, latched or otherwise rendered unusable. All locking devices shall be of an approved type. (UFC 1207.3) Dead bolts are not allowed on auxiliary exit doors unless the dead bolt is automatically retracted when the door handle is engaged from inside the tenant space. (UFC 1207.3) When two or more exits from a story are required, exit. signs shall be installed at the required exits and where otherwise necessary to clearly indicate the direction of egress. (UBC 1003.2.8.2) When two or more exits from a story are required and when two or more exits froma room or an area are required, exit signs shall be illuminated. (UBC 1003.2.8.5) Manually operated edge- or surface- mounted flush bolts and surface bolts are prohibited. When exit doors are used in pairs and approved automatic flush bolts are used, the door leaf having the automatic flush bolts shall have no door knob or surface- mounted hardware. Addition /relocation of walls, closets or partitions may require relocating and /or adding sprinkler heads.
