c. The City plans to conduct a pilot class in "green- gardening," grasscycling and/or backyard <br />home composting to give residents further information on these topics. <br />d. The City also plans to improve Tukwila's Compost Demonstration Garden with a hedge <br />of native shrubs and/or a box to hold composting pamphlets for visitors. <br />Proiect Goal: <br />Approximately, 2000 single family households subscribe to garbage service in the City. Of <br />these, approximately 460 households have yard waste service and generate about 359 tons of <br />yard waste a year. The City hopes to encourage all single family households to <br />reduce /recycle /reuse their yard waste through backyard composting and grasscycling and to <br />use other "green gardening" techniques to lessen the negative environmental impacts of yard <br />care. <br />The City wishes to raise awareness among residents about both home composting and <br />grasscycling as alternatives to curbside yard -debris pick -up and drop -off at the transfer <br />station. The City hopes to reduce the amount of grass clippings collected through yard waste <br />programs and sent to local composting facilities. <br />Deliverables: <br />distribution of a maximum of 50 compost bins <br />copies of all promotionalleducational materials that the City produces for local residents to <br />promote the regional grasscycling campaign <br />pilot class in "green gardening," home composting or similar topic <br />list of improvements made at Tukwila's Compost Demonstration Garden <br />Proiect Evaluation: <br />The City will evaluate success by undertaking the following: <br />tracking the number of compost bins distributed to residents; <br />estimating the amount of yard waste that may be diverted from collection due to backyard <br />composting; <br />preparing and administering a survey for residents to gauge their use of the distributed <br />compost bins over at least a six month period; <br />tracking the number of residents who attend the pilot class and compiling the results of a <br />survey given to participants; <br />tracking the total number of and type of promotionaUeducational materials distributed to <br />residents; and <br />monitoring the quantity of material collected from the onset of the regional grasscycling <br />campaign through the end of 1998, and comparing the quantity of material collected <br />during this period to the quantity of material collected during the same period of time in <br />1997. <br />3 <br />
